Tension brewing on Asian businessmen and indigenous Malawians

There is tension which is brewing between Asian businesspersons and indigenous Malawians over economic dominance and political power connections.

Citizens have been taking to social media and closed groups of indigenous Malawians to push government to liberate its people from the continuing bondage of poverty, deprivation and economic inequality.

There has been talk that government should economically emancipate its people from living below the poverty line and ensure economic empowerment through participation in government procurements fairly.

The government business, according to information seen by Nyasa Times, most of the contractors are of Asians from the Indian subcontinent.

From supplying materials to government to supermarkets to shopping malls, Malawian Asians have the prominent role in the country’s economy.

Former legislator Frank Mwenifumbo is on record saying  government should ensure there is a  deliberate policy,  “where we should make sure that a certain percentage of those procurements must be given to Malawian businessmen, that is only when we can grow this economy. “

He said the economic hardships that Malawians are going through are “uncalled for and unnecessary.”

Said Mwenifumbo: “Most of the monies are in the hands of foreigners.  When it comes to this kind of a situation, you hardly see them bringing back that money into the economy. “

He continued: “I can assure you if you give a black man, a Malawian, some business, the first and foremost, he will think of building something in Malawi here especially at his village.

“But look at our friends, they are making billions, and if you ask them as to what they have invested in Malawi, it’s zero.  That’s very unfortunate.”

Nick  Yiannakis this week took to Facebook to attack Asians that they are looting the  country’s resources, land property .

But Yiannakis provoked many when he inserted the religious card to his post, calling on Malawians to “remove all Muslim Asians will ill intent for Malawi, from Malawi.”

He later apologised for the post. But the racial tensions continued.

  2. Muslim Brotherhood! Crooks but very prayerful five times a day facing Mecca! Absolute hypocrites

  3. MUAMAR GADAFFI CHASED INDIANS OUT OF LIBYA ASK ME WHY..

THE DUBAI PRINCE IS IMPLEMENTING A POLICY THAT WILL EMPOWER DUBAI NATIVES DUE TO THE SAME INDIAN . THEY ARE TERRIBLE TO ANY ECONOMY HENCE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PUT IN PLACE A DELIBERATE POLICY TO EMPOWER ALL THE LOCAL PEOPLE.

  4. The fact that asians particularly pakistans and indians are crooks. Amabwera mmodzimmodzi kenako enawo kumabwera on temporary permit residence permit kenako kukwatira ndikupeza chiphaso chokhalira kenako mkudzabweretsa mkazi wake weniweni wachimalawi uja kukhala wantchito then zinthu ndikukhala. Kodi these asians amaberetsa 250000 dollars yodzapanga invest akamabwera kuno?

  5. Ndipo nkhani ya ma vote tikuvutikana nayo tokha , iwo ndikuvota komwe savota ayi. koma ntchito yawo ndiyopita kuseli kukahonga mapoliticians basi. Tatopa nazo zimenezi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. In fact I dont like the policy of giving contract to Asians, A Malawian ca not win a contract in Asia, so let the Asians leave my country alone. And Procurement Act should be put in a way that Malawian businesses of Malawian origin should benefit.

  7. The Asians have a saying ‘DZKO NDI WANU, NDALAMA NDI WATHU’ Govt must come out with a proper policy on empowering the local citizens economically. Local citizens must also work hard when such opportunity comes. I remember Kamuzu removed Asians from rural districts in order to create space for the indigenous Malawians to do business, but people failed, instead the shop buildings left by the Asians were converted to Tobacco barns or Chibuku tarverns. This resulted to hardships to the people in the areas as they had no where to buy essentials like clothes, bicycle parts, etc. Tiyeni titukule dziko lathu aMalawi. Amwenye sasunga ndalama ku bank komanso sikwenikweni kulipira custom duty kapena misonkho mwachilungamo. They are very corrupt. My fellow Malawians, The Country is ours. Lets not surrender it to foreign nationals. Dzuka Malawi. Usagone Tulo. Vula amehlo!

  8. These Asians are really bad people they maltreat black people anywhere in the world you can not separate racism against black people and an Asian, it’s in them black people even worse Africans are inferior to them. It’s going to be hard to find a good Asian. Angofuna kudyera amalawi. Even Ghandi was a racist. Koma umbuli Ku Malawi too much

  9. you will not see a malawian own a huge builiding block in India or farmland or a home. Why should they become number one priority in Malawi. Sakutukula dziko lathuli, yes they hire Malawians but they are savage employers.. A black malawian man or woman working for an asian will be maltreated and reminded that they are black and stupid and that although this is their land the money is for Asians!!!

  10. This is very true. Foreigners are buying big plots in our country, while we the owners are failing to purchase a piece of Land.
Eventually, we the owners of this country we shall be like foreigners in our own country.

We need to do something. Lets not leave this to be handled by government, rather lets fight together.

  11. Nick Yanikas statement which was retracted should be condemned . It is good that Nick realized his mistake and he has apologized. We Muslim Malawians want to start a political party , what has that got to do with Asians.

Asians are generally good people and they have the right to do business in Malawi as citizens. They are part of Malawi. We Malawians are also doing well in businesses but their can’t be comparison as their are 18m black Malawians and Asian community must be less than 15000 . So , their is no possibility of keeping the whole black population happy and not all can do business. Those of us who are working hard, we can see they are doing well in business.

Please Nyasa , do not incite people to be hating other minority communities, be it Asian, Nigerians , Burundians , Labanese , Chinese .

Any country develops with a cosmopolitan society.

  12. This is not true as Malawians of Asians origin and Indegenous Malawians have co existed in Malawi for centuries. Nowadays , Asians are investing back in Malawi than they used to do before. That was their forefathers who sent to India but this time they seem to be investing back in malawi.

They also employ Malawians more than the Govt employs civil servants. I know of many companies run by Malawians of Asian origin who employs more than 300 employees by one business . I am also one of them.

Asians are the biggest contributors in terms of Tax.
I think we Malawians are very lazy in terms of tax obedience .

Please stop instilling hatred towards a small community, Malawians are peaceful people and such articles are creating a big division and inciting hatred towards a minority.

  13. It’s ticking time boom. The indigenous Malawians are economic refugees in their own country. It’s not wrong for having foreign investors but checks & balances should be in place where equality is concerned. Our laws should be reviewed or it’s a recipe for disaster.

  14. The moment you connect Asians with Islam that will be the greatest mistake you will do coz we, Muslims though also suffering from the bondage of poverty as every Malawian, will construe this as an attack to our brothers n sisters in Islam as such we will side with them. MARK MY WORDS!

  15. Nick yanakis is a useless human being living in a world of his own. He has failed his businesses farming bakery etc. He even failed to win a seat at MCP convention. Empty tins make most noises. That is nick. Useless useless. Big talk zero action. Mr Nick, get a life. You need counselling as you are actually your own worst enemy, but you portray like everyone else is problematic . Be humbal bwana. Come to size. You wish to be other people . You are too envious of like of bwana gorge bwana lucky bwana buckol etc. Life is like that. Not all can be successful. Some have to be on lower level. Like you. U r on low level.
