UTM, MCP work on legal costs as MEC awaits bill
Legal teams for Dr. Saulos Chilima and Dr Lazarus Chakwera in the landmark presidential election case say they are still working on legal costs whose bill is to be footed by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
Titus Mvalo, one of the lawyers for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Chilima said they will be through with the calculation of the legal bill next week.
“We cannot finish calculating the bill within a short period of time because this case started way back in May, 2019,” said Mvalo.
He said the legal team had been working even on weekends.
Chikosa Silungwe, lead lawyer for the UTM president Chilima said the legal team has written the lawyers for MEC.
“We are yet to get their response,” said Chikosa.
He said if the two parties; the Chilima legal team and MEC legal team fail to agree on the costs, the issue will go back to the court for arbitration.
The Constitutional Court ordered MEC to pay the legal costs for both the Chakwera and Chilima legal teams whose bill, experts, will run into billions of the kwacha.

Opposition lawyers gonna be flying soon and swimming in monies but guys don’t forget MEC is also gets funded by taxpayers. Main lawyers are gonna retire from the exorbitant fees they will charge as our lawyers are known to be money suckers when it comes to litigation and court proceedings… in fact some of these charge more than what foreign lawyers wud charge.. Ine ma judge asanu awa andikayikitsa. They should be retired on mental grounds. How did they say Dpp should foot its own legal bills yet the ruling didn’t find dpp to be in the wrong. I thought mec was at fault hence should have borne all legal costs? None of these five should ever get promoted to the supreme Court of Malawi. Shame shameful

The judges who ordered this payment should look in the mirror and i recommend they undergo mental evaluation test.
Even its taxpayer’s money BUT give them they deserve it. They have done a tremendous job.

This is where one can tell that some people are not conscious of the taxes they contribute. On the other hand, the lawyers we have today are always aiming at milking the government and not being aware (or they just pretend) that the payments they are happily and eagerly willing to receive is from their taxes and everybody’s. Court cases in modern days is part and parcel of generating finances through illicit and crooked means coated as fulfillment of legal matters.
