Malawi records 5 new cases of Covid-19: 24 patients have recovered

Minister of Health Jappie Mhango has announced  that the number of  coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in Malawi now stands at 64, as six new cases have been registered on Wednesday.

Minister of Health Jappie Mhango, briefing journalists: Coronavirus cases in Malawi now at 63

Mhango, briefing journalists in Lilongwe, said the five new cases have been confirmed by three laboratories in Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu.

He said: “Three of the cases have been confirmed by Mzuzu central hospital lab. The 3 are from Nkhatabay. Both have travel history to Tanzania. Two arrived in the country on 8th May, 2020 from and one on 11th May, 2020. All are clinically stable.”

The minister said one case has been confirmed at National Reference Lab at PHIM in Lilongwe.

“She is a 53 year old female contact of the case from Chilinde. Yesterday a total of 43 samples were collected by Lilongwe District Health Office (DHO) and most of them were contacts of the Chilinde case, they are household and workplace contacts. Out of the 43 samples, only one tested positive,” said Mhango.

He said Lilongwe DHO is continuing with contact tracing for the case.

Another case has been confirmed by College of Medicine Lab, in Blantyre.

“The person is a 29-year-old lady from Thyolo. She is a contact of a confirmed case in Thyolo,” said the minister.

He said health workers are tracing all the contacts of the case so that they can also be tested for virus.

The Minister of Health said so far Malawi has now registered a total of 63 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

“Of these, 24 have successfully recovered 3 lost their lives and 36 are still under management by the health system,” he said.

Lilongwe remains the worst hit with 26 cases, including two deaths, followed by Blantyre with 16 confirmed cases and one death, Thyolo is third with nine cases while Mzuzu has three , Nkhatabay has three and one each in Chikwawa, Mulanje, Zomba, Nkhotakota, Mangochi, Karonga and Zomba.

Mhango said Ministry of Health is working hard to increase the number of testing centres to reduce the turnaround time for the samples.

Although public and private schools remain closed since March, church gatherings continue with strict social distance compliance while bars, central and mobile markets remain open with little compliance to social distancing.

The political campaign rallies for July 2 fresh presidential elections are being conducted without any social distancing measures attracting hundreds of people.

  1. Tanzania is highly infected yet people were busy praising the Leader ati sangapange Lockdown, if big commercial cities akupanga Lockdown ka Tanzania ndi kachani? Aphetsa Anthu

  2. Kumpanda kusamala tifa ndi covid-19, ochenjera akumavala masks.Others are waiting for the government. And the government is waiting for new cases to announce.Zovetsa chisoni kwabasi kumafunabe Kut anthu avotereni, Malawians yambani kuvala masks please kumava kamodzi anthu inu.Onse wopita kumisonkhano yandale akhale atavala masks.Nthendayi yikumafala munthu akuwoneka wamphavu zake.To the minister of health do not just put people in quarantine without telling them the truth. This government has failed to handle the coronavirus.Blame game is coming soon DPP tricks.

  3. Uku ndie kudya kwa Jappie.

Ndiye simwakawasiya mmakomo mwao yet ali ndi covid-19?
    So wait for local transmission.

  4. Inu. You mean today, May, people are still allowed entry into the country. This shows lack of seriousness. Really Judge Kenyatta should be the most happy person in Malawi. He has succeeded in bringing corona to Malawi.

  5. Don’t believe this government…….I have a relative in isolation at the quarantine centre in Blantyre. And I want the Malawi public to know what is happening in our country, God knows for what purpose…

My relative started feeling malaria symptoms somewhere in Mozambique on his way back from SA.

He bought LA at one of the shops in Mozambique and took it, he went through all the temperature checks as he passed through the Mozambique and Malawi border with no issues.

When he got to Blantyre the malaria symptoms persisted and he had also started coughing at this point, so after a few days he went to hospital to get checked out.

At the hospital upon hearing that he had just come back fro SA and had a fever and a cough, automatically they alleged that he has coronavirus.

He was showered with all sorts of insults by the medical personnel and asked to wait somewhere in a secluded area for the covid medical team to arrive.

The covid team indeed arrived in no time in full PPE gear and took a test sample from him and told him that they were taking him to a quarantine centre to put him in isolation.

After some resistance he obliged and that is where the whole conundrum started to unfold.
Up until 3 days ago thus after 10 days of being in isolation, my relative had not been told the test results but the following day after being put in isolation Jaipe Mhango had already made the announcement that this relative of mine had tested positive.

At the isolation centre he is not provided with any medication or food……relatives have to deliver food at the gate of the quarantine centre once a day after which one of the medics as and when is available will then give it to him, sometimes when the food is completely cold.

One wonders why the covid committee and the medical personnel are getting covid-19 allowances when the so called patients are just dumped in the isolation centres with no medical care.

Just three days ago he was asked to provide another sample so that they can check if he has TB because the initial coronavirus test was negative, they are telling him this now and yet the minister had already announced to the public a couple of weeks ago that he tested positive…..what the fuck is going on in our country.

Now it has been three days that my relative has the bottles filled up with the specimen but no medical personnel has come to correct it and yet they are claiming daily covid allowances that they are looking after covid patients….our country is so fucked up to the point that everyone is shafting somebody for personal gains.

Where is the covid money going if the so called patients you are locking up in quarantine centres are not given any medication, or any form of medical care or food.

So the only reason the govt is putting people in quarantine centres is just to help their coarse in begging money from the outside world so They can build more personal houses with swimming pools.

And of course to scare ordinary Malawians away from voting in the July elections…my Humble prayer Is that all those who are taking advantage of this global pandemic to make money for personal gain should catch the coronavirus themselves….

    1. Wow! You need to report this ti international organizations for real. This is a sad development. I wish your relative well. God bless you and your family.

    2. Sorry Alex Mapila. This shd be dehumanising for anyone to go through. It pains me alot yet am very far from the situation. Some thing and some one need to do a job to save pple from this situation. I hope that the isolation is such that there is no contact with other isolated pple otherwise one can now get infexted in the isolation centrea. SORRY MY BROTHER.

    3. Iwetu ndi galu! Umbuli ukuohani ng’ona za MCP nu! Mxiew! Corona virus is real anyani!

    4. Your story my friend is a clear example that this Covid 19 issue has sinister motives behind it, one of which is to delay the July 2 fresh Election under the pretext that the number of affected people is high enough to justify postponement of the poll.
One also wonders why, after more than a month Covid 19 tests are slack at the country’s entry points. Japie seems to enjoy announcing to the nation about cases from Tanzania. There should have been stringent measures at the border by ensuring no one proceeds inland unless they have finished the mandatory quarantine period.
Looks we are being taken for a ride.

    1. Nosense it is not Kenyatta who kept our borders open. It is the stupid government. Just now they are collecting more cases from RSA to flood Malawi with Covid cases before polling day so election can be postponed..
