Malawi Attorney General Silungwe takes non-religious oath of office without Bible
Attorney General Dr Chikosa Silungwe on Friday took the oath of office and allegiance before President Lazarus Chakwera in Lilongwe but it was non-religious.

Silungwe, who was vice-president Saulos Chilima’s lead counsel in the presidential election case, didn’t include the phrase “so help me God” at the end of the either oath. Nor did he place his hand on the Bible or Koran when he said them.
Wearing a face mask and raising his right hand up, Silungwe also replaced the word “swear,” which could have religious overtones, with “affirm.”
He has held his beliefs and the government have respected his right of choice.
Silungwe a respectable lawyer spotting his dreadlocks was appointed when President Chakwera initially named five people to Cabinet positions within days of his election.
Chakwera, 65, defeated former leader Peter Mutharika in June 23 court-sanctioned presidential election re-run.
The soft-spoken ex-preacher garnered 58.57% of the votes against Mutharika’s 39%.

Swearing in the name of anything is sin against God, we are only allowed to say yes or know. Mentioning the name of God will not change anything , even witches and wizards do play.
Kulumbila NDI tchimo sanalakwe silungwe anadziwa chimene amaphunzitsidwa. Welengani mateyo 5:33-37 komanso exodus 20:7. I was also told not to swear the heavens and earth it’s sin rather say yes or no ,thanks.
It is a disgrace and an abomination before GOD = the bible says in the book of Psalms, Anyone who builds a house without GOD – he builds it in VAIN. You can never run or manage people without the blessings of God otherwise you will do it in vain. God is the author of ALL Authorities and Powers = he gives the authority to anyone he wishes to give and he can take away that authority if you do not please him at any time – and he does that for a purpose, No one in this world can choose to have life without God and if there are some then they do it at their own risk – Ask King Nebuchadnezar of Babylon and his spirit will testify to you what happened to his life when he was the King of Babylon. Listen fellow Malawians let’s not play jokes with GOD – he is the Supreme GOD Yahweh is his name = Every knee shall bow and every Tongue confess that he is Yahweh, King of Kings and Lord of Lords!!!!! the author and finisher of the Universe. (Iye wakukhala nalo khutu amve chomwe mzimu woyera anena)
You are a lunatic black man who believes in the white man’s Bible without asking questions.
I don’t have any evil word or grudge against you no!!! because it’s not you who has written those evil words – it’s the devil and he has kept you in bondage of ignorance and darkness for years and if you are not going to know Jesus you will die with him but in chains of the devil. I have few words for you my dear, I see your life in great danger you need to repent of you sins and come to Jesus or else the devil will finish you soon = The bible says’ The Devil cometh not but to STEAL, DESTROY and then KILL you. Therefore stop following him and accept Jesus as your LORD and personal Savior. After this I will write no more but these words will hunt you where ever you go untill you accept Jesus Christ. . God bless you Marumbo.
Nonsense, not everyone in this world is a Christian. Our fofatherers did not believe in God. Christianity was brought to Africa by whites. If God is loving why is there so much suffering, poverty in the world. How can God love a few people make them rich and live in comfort while the majority suffer. Religion is there to stop people think, it takes over your common sense so that you can be subordinate to those who are doing well. Look at the number of prolhets Africa, Malawi has. Tell me who is poor. AG did the right thing. It is his ability to do the job we are interested in and not his religious beliefs.
May God have mercy upon you I wish God could talk to you in a special way so that you can believe that there’s God in heaven. We all suffer because we are all sinners – our forefathers sinned and rebelled against him and upto now we are sinning against him. And the bible says, ‘The wages of SIN is death = therefore as long as we live in a sinneful life the more the devil will lead us to hell and destruction. Let me tell you God is a true Democratic GOD he has given as the right to choose > LIFE or DEATH. Even Moses at one time in the Wilderness he asked the people of Isreal to choose which God tthey feel to worship? And for him Moses said, As for ME and my FAMILY we shall worship the most powerful God of Israel who created the heavens and the earth. Therefore, Mr. Edward if you do not believe in this God whom I personally serve, than start praying to your gods that he may save you life and the country Malawi from such calamities. What I believe is that only the word of God has eternal life everything in this world will perish but his word shall live for evermore. As for me I don’t mind how and who brought this Good Gospel to African but what I know is that his word came to African by the power of the HOLY GHOST the power that changes impossibles to be possibles, the power that removes DEATH and offers eternal LIFE, the power that removes WAR and offers PEACE, the power that removes spiritual ignorance and offers spiritual wisdom, the power that removes the bondage of SIN and offers SALVATION in Christ JESUS. All what is required for Mr. Edward is for you to meet JESUS CHRIST the man of the cross – he gave his life for our sins; if only you can humble yourself and open up your heart and recieve him as you personal saviour your life will not be the same, believe me you will not reglect in your entire life. Lastly Jesus is just close to you just accept him and he will come and stay with you forevermore.
23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.
24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
Such nonsense. This country is doomed.
Why is it that everyone has to believe?, what is belief?… the world is full of believers but see how the world is…. kodi ndekuti mitu yathu inagofriza pa belief basi?….. umva “umakhulupilira chani, ndani? STOP THE NOSENSE
Palibepo nkhani apa….aaah
Is he an atheist or is he a Rastafarian? I wonder.
So many in the past have taken the oath and still gone against it through corruption. Good on him I say, let him prove himself worthy under his belief in being a law abiding man. God have us the justice, now man must walk his path.
Nothing new these days. Religion is for Africans due to massive poverty. It’s not there in Europe.
Amen
Good man 👍
Kodi Peter Mutharika ndi wa mpingo wanji?
Satanic. He is a 😈 worshipper.
The Constitution of the Republic of Malawi does not provide for a State Religion. It does, however, provide for a need to respect religious belief. Honourable Silugwe is within his rights to use the bible/quran or not when taking oath of office because Malawi is not legally a christian state. It is a secular state with a majority religious population.
Anthu alibe mantha eti mpaka kumukana Mulungu in front of millions of viewers. Ine thupi linagwidwa tsemwe. So let’s just imagine God is real and gululu maso ndi maso ndi Mulungu aChikosa muzati chani?
My advise to ethicist is always pretend to be a fool by believing in God for you will lose nothing if you do that in vain rather than pretend to be dolo on earth only to find God is real.
Sanakane Mulungu koma sanafune kuseweretsa mau a Yehova. Ndimunthu atha kudzalakwitsa patsogolo. Ngati unena kuti ulibe uchimo udzinamiza wekha. Bible it’s a Holy book don’t play around with it.
Everyone has the right to believe in whatever they want. Just respect them.
Mukati gululu masa ndi maso ndi Mulungu mukutanthauza chani?, i think Silungwe is avoiding this kind of religious nosense, see how you think
You language shows you are also an unbeliever. “Imagine God is real” seriously coming from a believer? Silungwe is better
Mantha a chani? So you only believe out of fear? God help you.

But the question is what does the Malawi constitution require? Is he in breach of the constitution or not? We may say that there is no story here but as an attorney general he is the custodian of the Malawian constitution and if he can not take any oath under religious obligation, then that is mistake number one. The attorney general has started his office in breach of the same constitution that he is required to defend.
SB Chinji, SC, may you kindly advise us which section or part of the constitution he has breached, sir? You appear to be very knowledgeable on constitutional matters.
He has affirmed so there is no problem
@SB Chinji, you’re wrong actually. The constitution stipulates that one should take an “oath of office ” , it does not stipulate that one should swear by the Bible or the Quran when taking this oath because the constitution recognises and respects freedom of religion.
How about if one’s faith is Judaism, Buddhism, Zen, Scientology, Church cha Makolo, etc? Does it mean that one cannot therefore be sworn in as a public officer? If a non-religious person were to be appointed to a public office, does it mean that he/she can be forced to swear by the Bible or Quran? No, of course not.
Not believing in God is a religion in itself. The most important thing is taking the oath, whether one will take the oath through swearing by the Bible or not is of no consequence.
I, as a devout Christian, would love to meet Dr Silungwe and preach the good news of Jesus Christ to him. It’d be up to him to take it or leave it. But if he declines it this cannot preclude him from taking the oath.
An oath is an oath whether it’s been taken by swearing by the Bible, the Quran or any other religious symbol.
Since Dr Silungwe has dreadlocks, I may venture to surmise that he is a Rastafarian. He is free to take the oath of office by holding a joint of ganja in his hand. Legally, it would still be a valid oath.
He is there to defend the constitution of Malawi not the Bible
Nuff respect to Silungwe.
There was Nga Ntafu who used to take oath without holding any religious anthology
All the best silungwe.
Great to see these accommodations not everyone is a Christian or Muslim
Palibepo nkhani apa. Enanu inde ndinu a Khrisitu koma Vigololo, mowa, mobodza, miseche, kuba, daily…

Alignment to religion is a personal choice, it is not by force, If Chikosa does not believe in deity, let it so be. It is not irregular.
Ufitiii,😂😂😂 anyway muzidye ndlamazo mwandiiiiii Anthu anvesesooo
So what? You think we are all supppsed to be bible bashers. Most of you here are fake christians and Muslims anyway, you only go to pray for networking purpose. After that you womanise, drink, steal, pillage and plunder all over town. Fake people.
