Chilima pleased with reforms in the Judiciary: Assures of Tonse govt support
Vice-President Saulos Chilima met the Judiciary management to appreciate the progress of the reforms that they are undertaking as well as to discuss new areas of reform, giving assuarance that the Tonse administration, which President Lazarus Chakwera is leading, remains committed to supporting the justice delivery system- not in words but in practice.
The Veep, who is also Minister of Economic Planning and Public Sector Reforms, said he was pleased to note that the Judiciary has registered tremendous progress in the reforms it has been undertaking.
“The reforms have been clearly classified as implemented ones, under implementation and planned reforms. The reforms that have been implemented this far include case management system, creation of High Court divisions to ensure specialisation in dealing with cases and to guarantee speedy disposal of cases and the placement of professional magistrates at District Courts with the aim of improving service delivery,” he said.
He said on reforms under progress, the Judiciary is working on performance appraisals, functional reviews, service charter, court rehabilitation and the construction of a commercial court.
One of the planned reforms that the Judiciary is working on to ensure that it acquires a fixed percentage of national budget to ensure sustainable financial independence.
Why reform the institution that has just given you a cut from the k9. 7 billion? It’s easy to talk about reforms where you have no entitlement to the cash. As long as you hear the money is meant for you, that’s when you utter such nonsense as the judiciary reforms are impressive.

Zonse zimene zachilima. Judiciary in your pocket how can you not be impressed. Obviously the judiciary is also impressed with you. I mean after benefiting from judiciary I would also say the same.
What reforms is he talking about. The judiciary in Malawi gives priority to election cases more especially when they have an interest like the recently concluded elections case where the judiciary awarded the petetioners cost becaisevthey have their cut on the 9 billion.
Cases for poor people take long to be concluded or they are just thrown away.
The Industrial Relations Court leaves a lot to be desired. This court is almost non-existent and the cases are always taking place a snail’s pace. There are cases dating from 2007 at IRC and most of the complainants are dead or too old. Why should the employment cases be heard in the cities only? Why can you not allow magistrates to handle them? Another frustrating issue at IRC is that of panelists. They do not come sometimes because they say they are not getting enough money. Bodza ili. The problem with Southerners is that you do not take education seriously and you are simply lazy people who like maganyu, kuba, prostitution, superstition and all kinds of bad things. Bingu deliberately introduced the quota system trying to improve you. The only way is to start working hard and reduce school drop outs and the same applies to the Central Region where people think of growing tobacco.

Please Chilima be realistic. Which reforms can you show us that the Judiciary is doing well. Cases are still there not concluded way from 2000, the Judiciary staff always report for duties at 11am on daily basis, The stuffs are rude when handling clients. Nothing has changed in Judiciary and we are wondering why you are saying there are good reforms. Why don’t you just thank the Judiciary for the job well done to assist the Tonse Alliance.
