Police fight civilians in Thyolo, 2 shot

Malawi police and civilians conflicts resurface  on Monday at Bvumbwe Trading Centre in Thyolo where running battles between the two sides created tension as community members allegedly sought to avenge the shooting of two of their colleagues by a police officer.

Riot police in Bvumbwe

The conflict was sparked by a brawl on Sunday night between two civilians and an unidentified police officer at a beer drinking joint. The police officer, who was allegedly beaten by the civilians,  attempted to arrest one of them on Monday and resisting arrest the police officer shot him on his right-hand side of the chest.

The shooting victim’s colleague tried to approach the police officer but he  too also got shot in the process.

After the second person got shot, people were infuriated even more as they blocked the  Limbe-Thyolo-Mulanje-Muloza Road around Bvumbwe with stones and burning tyres until a reinforcement from Limbe Police Station moved in to quell the situation.

Limbe Police Station spokesperson Patrick Mussa confirmed that two civilians were shot at Bvumbwe, but they are  “still investigating the matter.”

He said police are expected to release a full report on what happened.

Mussa, who said that no arrest had been made in connection with the incident, said police took the two civilians to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre.

He also said he was yet to get the identities of the shot civilians.

Let’s be supportive to our Police service. They might have been executing their duties and then disturbed in the process

Previously we had a war of words between the Chewa and Tumbukas, including the Ngoni (in some cases the Yao, Lhomwe, Sena were also taken as the Chewa dragged into the battle which was not theirs) But now it seems the game has changed, its the Chewa and the Lhomwe) Now I can really see which tribe is a problem in Malawi. Please let’s change.

At least our colleagues had free entertainment. It’s rare to watch free gun fights in Thyolo.

Bvumbwe police are known to be very corrupt and sooner or later there will be disaster at this police unit. Chakwera said he will reform the police but so far the police are even worse. Imagine the Nsundwe issue has been swept under the carpet because most of the police officers who were involved in the rape are from the central region and related to the IG.

Leave Chakwera out if this please

Hate it or take it but it's a fact

Ofcourse the shooting was bad but u Lomwes learn to respect the new government. It’s not your Cadet running the government any longer, this is new administration and u need to accept that otherwise bullets will overflow in your body till u realise that Peter Muntharika and Charles Mchacha are not at the helm.

Such comments have the ability to fuel the violence. Let us not use fuel to quench out fire. We are one Malawi. The issue in Thyolo must be investigated and proper action be taken on the found to be wrong. The police officer abused his power by firing at innocent and armless citizens. He should have conceided defeat in the civil fight.

You are very stupid, wamva? What has that to do with the Lomwes? Do you know what Bvumbwe trading centre consists of? Its a matter of looking at the issue objectively. Someone has commented that Bvumbwe Police are very corrupt, so you want that to be defended, nonsense.

If you don’t have a comment why can’t you just keep quite. The people who are short are malawians. Every citizen must condemn the shooting. If no arrest can be made this can cause great anger in the victims friends. Since police officer is using a government gun as his weapon for protection against people he provokes, the community can also use other means to avenge. As malawians let us keep our identity as law abiding citizen. Let’s allow our law enforcers do it’s job on the matter. Let peace prevail. I wish the victims quick recovery. I condemn the… Read more »

We all know that Chewas have a long standing conflict with the Tumbuka people and not the Lhomwe, otherwise other tribes fail to stay peacefully with the Tumbukas since they think that we are all Chewas. Becareful you can be exposed you children of the devil. why do you want to have conflicts with any tribe that is doing well in this country? Moyo wa zilombo umenewo.

For your own information, Bvumbwe is a Ngoni area and Even T/A Bvumbwe is a chief of Ngoni people in Thyolo. Please have good knowledge of your country. There are remnants of Ngoni people in Thyolo (some died after eating buffalo beans also known as Kalongonda at Maravi mountain which was a war tactic by the Lhomwe) These people are never fools, they are clever.
