HRDC tells police IG to discipline cops assaulting people over Covid-19 measures
Rights activists the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) have asked the police Inspector General to discipline officers who are brutalising people who fail to mask up as a covid-19 preventive measure.
This comes amid widespread reports in the country’s cities and towns that police officers are beating up who fail to wear face masks.
In a press statement, HRDC Chairperson Gift Trapence says his organization is dismayed with reports of police brutality in enforcing Covid-19 guidelines.
Meanwhile, Malawi police spokesperson James Kadadzera has said they are looking into the matter.
Trapence and HRDC national coordinator Luke Tembo are reminding the police that Malawi is not a police state but a democratic country with laws that have to be followed and human rights that have to be respected.

Time to make money
HRDC is now ordering the IG around
Kumalawi kuli security breakdown. We do not have enough police. Even for the few police we have, they are underpaid and unmotivated. What do you mean they should be disciplined? Docking their pay when they are already underpaid is a recipe for corruption, they will make up the shortfall through bribes. Suspending them with increased security breakdown is unhelpful. Certain things are imperfect, and after all, this is not the new Yerushalem. Zinthu zina zimakhala imperfect, tiyeni tizisiye.
Why do people work in the police if they believe they are underpaid? If they weren’t working in the police would they be earning more? Many of the police are simply there for money. Their regular salary and the cash they can fish from others. They certainly don’t do their jobs well.
You have not seen something yet.here in ndirande we are planning for a show down with them. They will regret
We have lost too many friends and relatives. Take all measures humanly possible to ensure we do not loss any more. The lose of even one, is one too many.
If it means beating, then beat very very hard.
When you want to defeat covid preventative measures, then you become my enemy number one. I have lost enough close friends to covid. No more, no more.
If we beat everyone that broke the law there would be no end of beatings for everyone in Malawi. Police don’t determine the penalty. If someone breaks the law they can receive fines or be arrested. Police beating people is just asking for retaliation.
True most police officers take the law into their hands, please take a leaf from neighbouring Tanzania,
