Police quiz Katopola, Malawi parliament officials
Clerk of Parliament Matilda Katopola on Tuesday appeared at National Police Headquarters at Area 30 in the capital Lilongwe before Fiscal Police where she quizzed on many procurement irregularities.
According to sources, the Clerk of Parliament was quizzed on the infamous Monick trends, a firm that Katopola owns, which was embroiled in procurement and supply abnormality.
Katopola was summoned to Police alongside Principal Clerk Assistant Jeffrey Mwenyeheli and Stores keeper a Mr. Kapalamula.
Nyasa Times correspondent who saw Katopola as she came from the Police Headquarters after being interrogated disclosed said looked distraught, emancipated and in dire straits.
National Police spokesperson Davie Chingwalu when asked about the matter said: “I am sorry; I cannot discuss that at the moment as I have no information.”
He added: “When I receive information from the concerned department, we will certainly make it public but I have no idea what you are talking about.”
Nyasa Times reported about a dossier of corruption evidence that exposed the Clerk of Parliament has behind payment that national assembly made to her company Monick Trends on services which dogged the procurement authorities of the national assembly.
Despite being faulted by Parliamentary Service Commission for wrongful self enrichment, Katopola was shielded by late president Bingu wa Mutharika.
Katopola, a lawyer by training, did not return telephone messages or reply to an e-mail seeking comment.
She is currently on forced leave.
