Linthipe accident: Forest official dead, 8 seriously injured

One Dedza forest official died on spot while eight other officials are hospitalized for multiple injuries following an accident that occurred on Friday in the district involving their vehicle and another belonging to Kapetu Enterprises.

Dedza Police spokesperson Sergeant Edward Kabango identified the deceased as Anthony Chimutu, 31, from Mulikha village in the area of Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe.

He said Chimutu and his colleagues were fixing their vehicle registration number 047MG025 which had a break down at Linthipe 3 when the other vehicle driven by Isaac Hirwe, 60, registration number BP1067 going in the direction of Lilongwe crashed into their stationary vehicle.

“The officers were patrolling the area for illegal charcoal vendors and had a break down at Linthipe 3. As they were fixing it, another vehicle coming from Blantyre crashed into their stationary vehicle causing one death and eight injuries in the process,” he said

He said Hirwe who comes from Chapasuka village in the area of Traditional Authority Chigalu in Blantyre did not sustain any injuries and is in police custody to answer a charge of causing death by reckless driving contrary to section 126(4c)of the Road Traffic Act.
