Nigerian leader leaves Malawi satisfied with state-visit
Nigerian President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, on Tuesday left Malawi after a two-day state visit.
Jonathan told journalists at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) before departure that the state visit satisfied his needs especially that together with his counterpart Malawi President, Joyce Banda, had established bilateral relationship and trade links between two countries.
“I am returning home very happy and satisfied. I thank President Joyce Banda and the people of Malawi for warm welcome accorded to me and my delegation,” said Jonathan, adding that during his stay in the country they held various talks with private sector.
“I want African states to have equal opportunities for us to grow. Africa is a small continent as compared to other continents on the globe.
“If Africans established sustainable links we could grow marvelously in our economy. We need to be united and establish good trade links,” he explained.
President Dr. Jonathan said his government would provide technical personnel to Malawi to help in the fuel-survey project on Lake Malawi.
The Nigeria’s President also said it was important to ensure that African leaders remove barriers that hinder freedom of movement between these two countries.
He proposed that passports and visas should be removed to necessitate free movement between Nigerians and Malawians.
“My visit has made it possible for us to start business of importing rice from Malawi,” said Jonathan, adding that he was impressed that Malawi was hosting many Nigerians who were engaged in various business enterprises.
President Banda and Malawi’s Vice President Khumbo Kachali saw off the Nigerian President during his departure at Kamuzu International Airport.
During the visit, the two leaders launched Malawi-Nigeria Business Forum which aims at forming economic partnership, Technical Manpower Assistance Agreement and Economic and Technical Partnership Agreement as well as National Cassava Commercialization Programme among others.
