VP Kachali ‘insulted the intelligence of Malawians’ – opposition
Malawi Vice President Khumbo Kachali has come under fire for his remarks he made in Karonga, saying the presidency, in the endless travels, doesn’t use money belonging to the parents of their critics hence they shouldn’t waste their time because the travels are far from over.
The opposition has blasted the Vice President for his comments, saying shame should be on him for “insulting” Malawians who pay taxes for the public officers’ expenses including the presidency.
“The statement is an insult to the intelligence of Malawians. It is unacceptable, improper, offensive and obnoxious,” DPP spokesperson Nicholas Dausi said.
He said Kachali and the People’s Party government should not be immune to criticisms.
“The despicable statement should not have come from the second-in command of the government. The concerns raised on too much travel are real and should be addressed,” he said.
PPM president Mark Katsonga said there indeed on the presidency to cut on some of the travels as part of austerity measures, pointing out that the money saved could be able to solve the shortage of drugs in public hospitals exposing the poor to premature deaths due to curable diseases.
Katsonga said the statement by Kachali was “shocking.”
MCP chief whip in Parliament Joseph Njobvuyalema said Kachali should be reminded didn’t elect him but was handpicked by President Joyce Banda, therefore should not make “rude” remarks to the tax payers.
Njobvuyalema said Kachali’s statement was “ill-mannered”.
UDF deputy spokesman Ken Ndanga called Kachali utterances “rude”.
“This arogance is what killed President Bingu Wa Mutharika. Kachali was not elected by Malawians; he is vice president through fate. He should not insult Malawians. Indeed power corrupts,” said Ndanga.
He said Kachali should have justified the Presidency’s need for travel in a better manner.
