JB gets Malawi agriculture support in US
DuPont, a global agricultural seed and chemical company, has pledged to assist President Joyce Banda and her administration in efforts to ensure quality seeds in Malawi, particularly maize, to end hunger.
President of DuPont, Paul Schickler said his company will help Malawi in the agriculture sector so as to end hunger and poverty, complimenting President Banda’s ‘Presidential Initiative on Hunger and Poverty Eradication’.
Schickler said this when he made a courtesy call on President Banda on Tuesday at Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, New York City, USA. He was accompanied by Ms.Lystra Antoine, Director, Agricultural Development, Pioneer and Daniel Jacobi, DuPont Vice President for Asia Pacific, China, Europe and Africa.
“President Banda’s vision of job and wealth creation through agriculture is a good vision. As an international company with years of agricultural expertise, including quality seed production, we will help her in the agriculture sector so that lives of Malawians change,” Schickler said.
He observed that President Banda “seems committed to improving lives of people” through her initiative, which he said would ensure that people have food and money at the same time.
On seed production, the President of DuPont, said his company will help Malawi generate seed that will adapt to the climate of Malawi.
“We hear there is an issue of seed scarcity in Malawi; we have promised the President to look into this issue and help generate seed that is best suited for the Malawi climate,” he said, adding that they will initiate and implement extension and education services to help Malawian farmers grow productive seed.
During the meeting, President Banda was accompanied by Malawi’s Ambassador to the United States, Steve Matenje and Presidential Initiative on Hunger and Poverty Reduction National Coordinator, Flora Kaluwire, among others.
Matenje told journalists after the meeting that DuPont will assist President Banda achieve her vision for food sufficient Malawi, thereby accelerating social as well as economic development.
“A hungry nation can hardly develop; the Malawi Government needs partners like Du Pont if we’re to achieve food sufficiency,” the Malawi envoy said.
DuPont, is an American chemical company that was founded in July 1802 as a gunpowder mill by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont. DuPont was the world’s third largest chemical company based on market capitalization and ninth based on revenue in 2009. Its stock price is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
