Scottish govt splashes 50 scholarships to Malawi students
Scottish government has provided 50 scholarships to Malawian students studying in the country’s Universities as one way of improving and increasing the number of needy students attending higher education.
Speaking after an audience with President Joyce Banda, Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary, Michael Russells said under the David Livingstone program, Malawians will receive scholarships to study for a year in Universities in Malawi.
“In honor of David Livingstone, the Scottish government has provided 50 scholarships to Malawi Government, this is to cement the relationship between the two countries,” Said Russells adding that 25 scholarships are for women students.
The Cabinet Secretary said he was touched by the level of commitment that President Banda has towards education especially for the girl child hence the awarding of half of them to the women student.
Russells said he also discussed about health and renewable energy with the Malawi president.
“Our government is also committed to work with Malawi government on health issues, we know that education and health are interdependent hence the need to have a healthy nation so that they should be educated,” said Russells.
The visiting Scottish Secretary, who is in the country until Sunday, visited State House Primary school in Lilongwe where he donated iPads and IPods to the pipils to inspire them and make learning exciting.
