Nomads through to quarter finals of Malawi Presidential Cup: Edge out Chinamwali FC in Zomba
A brace from Innocent Dzimbiri and a lone goal notched by Timothy Chitedze were enough to sail Mighty Wanderers through into the quarter finals of the prestigious Presidential Cup played on Saturday at a fully packed Zomba Community Ground.
The Nomads, who kicked-off the match on a jittery note had to wait for 25th minute to break the deadlock when a back hill from Benard Harawa, who was a marvel to watch in the first half set through Chitedze and released a thunderous shot straight into Chinamwali FC net.
After conceding the first goal, Chinamwali players raised the tempo of the game as they piled up pressure to the Nomads but lack of experience denied them several chances to find an equalizer in the first 45 minutes.
The Nomads technical panel, featured Dzimbiri and Anthony Banda up front, had all the reasons to jail Banda for missing several scoring opportunities the notable one in the 40th minute when he was left with the goalkeeper to beat.
In the second half, with the vocal support from thousands of Nomads fans who traveled from Blantyre to drum up support to their team, Wanderers lion-heartened striker Innocent Dzimbiri notched in a brace to the satisfaction of the spectators.
‘Shakira’ show
After the game, thousands of supporters descended on the Flames captain Joseph ‘Shakira’ Kamwendo trying to have a grip of the former Mighty Wanderers star w.
Kamwendo, who was in his former club colours, was escorted by fans in his car while chanting songs like: “JK JK ndi bwana wa Malawi! JK JK ndi mfumu wa Flames.”
This happened as Kamwendo was blasting to a reggae hits on top brass.
However, despite the game well patronized it was surprising that only K740,000 was raised during the match with K169, 937 going to the teams.
FAM received K133, 000 while sports council went a
way with K33, 000. Security went away with K57, 000,as ground owners received K169, 937.
