Mutharika promises to ‘squeeze’ underground crime gang
President Peter Mutharika has said he is aware of the security lapse in the country and vowed a crackdown on what he claimed an underground gang.
“From now onwards, I am declaring war against crime. If they continue terrorising this country, I will deal with them,” Mutharika said on Sunday at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre during a public rally.
Mutharika said he has information on “what is happening underground,” saying the underworld organised crime gangs will be hit .
He said the undergroung campaign is to destabilise his government and vowed to arrest people behind and “we will squeeze them.”
He directed the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Paul Chibingu “to wage war against crime and ensure that every perpetrator is dealt with accordingly”.
Government insiders said there will be a spate of arbitrally arrests which will largely be politically motivated.
Mutharika, however, advised the minister to operate within the realms of the laws so that innocent people are not persecuted.
