Malawi U-20 thrilling start at Cosafa Cup, beat Seychells

Goals from Isaac Maluwa and Mike Kaziputa were enough for a perfect start for Malawi at the 2011 Metropolitan Cosafa youth championships in a game they controlled against Seychells at the University of Botswana stadium.

The junior Flames controlled the proceedings from the first whistle with a man of the match performance from Tony Chitsulo.

Dalitso Sailesi,Yamikani Chester,Bongani Kaipa and Mike Kaziputa were in a different class and it was a game that the junior Flames deserved to win.

It was a performance that left stand-in head coach Leo Mpulula satisfied and looking forward to the next game against Lesotho on Sunday with confidence knowing that qualification will be certain if Thursday’s perfomance is anything to go by.

Mpulula: Took charge of the side

Maluwa opened the scoring in the 36th minute with the easiest of a finish before Mike Kaziputa’s powerful strike sunk Seychells in the 66th minute.

“It’s an encouraging performance from the boys and we deserved to win convincingly and am happy. It was important to win the first game” Mpulula told Nyasa times after the game.

He said the focus now is on the next game against Lesotho which will decide whether the team goes through to the next stage or not from group B.

Head coach John Kaputa watched the game from the stands after arriving from Zambia on official duties late and Leo was in charge.

In the tournament’s opening game, hosts Botswana were held to a goalless draw by Mozambique.
