Bakili Muluzi heading to Burundi on peace mission
Malawi’s former President Bakili Muluzi is expected to leave for Burundi as part of African Forum Peace and Solidarity in the run up to the country’s elections in May and June.
Muluzi, who also led Commonwealth Observer Mission team to Nigeria’e Elections last month, confirmed receiving communication from the Executive Secretray of African Forum that he would be part of the team that will be n Burundi from Monday next week to April 17.
The Malawi’s firstpresident during the multi-party system of government said a summit of former African heads of state and government met in Ethiopia last month and resolved to deploy the team after Dr Nkosazana Dlamin-Zuma, chairperson of Africa Union Commission, briefed the assembly about the situation in Burundi.
He said he has been informed that he would be part of the Goodwill Mission to Burundi to be led by Sir Quett Ketumile Masire, former Botswana President.
The mission’s terms of reference is to consult with all relevant stakeholders in Burundi with a view to contributing towards the promotion of peace before, during and after the elections which are scheduled to be held in May and June.
The team is also expected to work towards reaching a common understanding with all relevant stakeholders in Burundi on the importance of peace and stability in the entire region.
