Walter retains FAM president post
Football Associatio of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu on Saturday got his mandate renewed when he was voted back in office after scoring a landslide victory against challenger Hnery ‘Kaka’ Chibowa in Salima.
Nyamilandu got 35 votes from delegates and Chibowa got 9 votes.
Before the elections, Chibowa protested that there was “attempted moral deterioration or ploy that encourages use of corrupt practices for rigging such as bribery or fraud aimed at undermining good governance.”
Nyamilandu was humble in victoy while Chibowa was gracious in defeat.
The FAM president says he will pursue what he highlighted in the manifesto that is finding sponsorship for Bullets FC, Mighty Wanderers and sponsorship for another competition.
He says it’s going to be a “difficult” term because they have to work hard to repay the trust of the affiliates.
Nyamilandu called for calm and harmony after the elections and says its time all stakeholders work together for the good of the game.
Chibowa conceeded defeat but says the playing field was not level. He says “life has to go on” after this defeat but offered himself to offer support if he is needed.
Moses Mkandawire went through as first vice president unoppossed while Pilawo Ngalamira beat Elijah Kachikuwo by 38 votes to 7.
Executive members are; Jabbar Alide, Othaniel Hara, Alexander Waya, David Dube, James Mwenda and Paul Mzungu.
Fifa’s development officer Ashfold Mamelodi, who came to oversee the elections, described them as free and fair and urged the new executive to continue working hard and put the interest of the game first.
