Admarc guard shoots woman as irate villagers loot maize at depot

A woman has been shot while others have sustained injuries following a commotion at Nkhwazi Admarc depot in Mchinji on Friday where angry community members detained a truck which was transporting maize from Mchinji to an undisclosed destination.

Shot dead

State produce trader Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc)  officials gave instruction for the transfer of some tonnage of maize from the said depot, a development which annoyed the community.

The community then descended on the truck carrying the maize, mercilessly looting over100 bags of maize.

During the incident, a woman was shot by an Admarc security guard for the said depot who was trying to stop the free-for-all looting of maize.

The woman has been reffered to Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe

Admarc Regional Manager for the centre, David Masache, confirmed giving a directive to transfer the maize but gave no further information.

Member of parliament for the area Agnes Nkusa Nkhoma wondered why the Admarc officials ordered the transfer of the maize when her area also needed the grain.

This is good. It should be a shoot on sight order for any looters, thieves or demonstrators – EVEN IF THEY ARE WOMEN.

Some misinformed and misguided people think the central and north produce food for the southern region…on the contrary, the southern region doesn’t rely on maize only as a staple. They live on pigeon peas, cow peas, cassava, bananas, rice etc…it is the central and north who depend on the south for everything from Tea, coffee, macadamia, salt, sugar, electricity, bananas to baking flour because major industries are based in the southern region. It’s the whole reason Blantyre is the commercial capital of Malawi and not LL and Mzuzu… Northern Region are only mountains, forests and monkeys.MRA has explicitly told the North… Read more »

If the north only contributes 5% in taxes why is the government rejecting federal government system? Federal government system is the answer let them manage their 5% tax contribution efficiently, the central manages it own and you manage your tea, macadamias etc that don’t even belong to indigenous Malawians.

By the way if Malawi implements federal system it will be based on district and not Region, because the Constitution of Malawi stipulates 28 Districts and not regions, read it carefully Mr KKK

DPP has ordered admarc to transfer maize from the north and central regions to be distributed to hungry lomwes in the south. Northerners are smart and have organised themselves not to allow a single truck load of maize to leave the north for the south. This is why big mouthed Mphepo has said that APM will withdraw all development projects from the north becoz they are blocking the maize to be moved to the south. DPP should know that maize was sent to those deports in the north and centre for a reason so why moving to the south now?… Read more »

Achimwene musataye nthawi ndi mabodza. Mulanje already has big cobs of corn. by end of February some should even have started harvesting and believe me there is a lot of maize in these areas this year. Also those from the Shire highlands will tell you that Mozambique harvests maize about a month before the highlands and that is what people consume before harvesting theirs so please do not be decieved that maize is coming from the north.
