Aford president Chihana in K10m ‘katapila’ loan scandal

Alliance for Democracy (Aford) president  Enoch Chihana has found himself in K10 million katapila loan scandal after he failed to pay back the money and the lender has taken a vehicle and is demanding another.

Chihana: Aford leader

According to High Court Lilongwe registry documents, Chihana took K5 million from E.Kabuli in March, 2020 and agreed to pay back K10, 125, 000 in katapila loan arrangement at the rate of 102.5 per cent interest to be paid within 20 days.

He pledged his two vehicles; a BMW registration number RU 740 and Land Rover Discovery registration number RU 7799.

Chihana serviced the katapila loan and paid as follows; paid K2 million on April 16, 2020, K1 million on April 30, 2020, K1.6 million on April 15, 2020 amounting to K4.6 million.

“That following this the claimant agreed to discharge one of the vehicles I had put as security namely BMW RU 740 as the other vehicle that was left with him Land Rover Discovery RU 7799 was more valuable than the balance of the money ie MK5,528,000.

“That I was out of the country I could not manage to settle the balance within the agreed time,” says Chihana in a sworn affidavit.

Chihana says he surrendered the Land Rover Discovery so that Kabuli could sell it, saying the value of the vehicle was K20 million.

He said Kabuli obtained a court to sell the Land Rover Discovery to which Chihana did not contest, knowing that the katapila man would get more than the K5.5 million balance.

“That I was thus shocked when the sheriffs of Malawi seized my vehicle BMW registration number RU 740 that I had duly redeemed when I paid the sum of MK4,600,000.

“That I was surprised because as far I know the claimant’s claim as pleaded in this action was duly satisfied with him getting the order to sell the Land Rover Discovery RU 7799 that he expressly and specifically prayed to this court and is this action,” he says.

He then asked the court to pend the seizure and the sale of the vehicle.

The court is yet to set date for the full hearing of the case.

  1. 🤔🤔Is Katapila legal? Shocking that the courts even recognize such malpractice! Does he pay taxes on it? Is he a registered lender with financial services regulators🙆🏿‍♀️🙆🏿‍♀️🙆🏿‍♀️

  2. Mr Chihana sell the Presidency of Aford to Frank Mwenifumbo. That’s the best fir a bankrupt leader and Frank will pay big as he is a tycoon

  3. Kabuli is not someone who should be left loose in society to lend money at 102.5% to our politicians like MIa, SKC and others. Enoch Chihana is not the only politician with a debt to Kabuli.

  4. Katapila ndi kuba abale. Fiscal Police investigate the guy, Kabuli. Can any bank charge 102% profit? Broad day robbery.

  5. To lend money one needs a license. So is this E Kabuli a registered bank? Enoch do not entertain the claim of this con man who is being put up by your political enemies who aspire for your position in Aford.

  6. antu onsewa amabwelekesaba ndalama nde wolakwa akaleno Kabul zoona zimenezo ngati chiana anachita kumupeza yeka amudyele kumene

  7. Uchitsiru sungapose apa bambo Chihana! Zodabwitsa what these politicians do! Weeks ago it was Vuwa Kaunda beaten up ndiwangongole wa 6 million kwacha. Mukamayenda mtoun mu magalimoto odula kumakopa akazi ngati Zenizeni koma aaaah! Zosasililika ataaaaa! Manyazi bwa?

  8. Chakwera is harbouring plenty of such debt ridden persons in tonse alliance. They are in government only to service such debts. This UTMCP government is not inspiring any hope at all. Even chilima is heavily debited to Kambala and bishop Msusa and has serious other loans to settle. Chakwera himself is also a wounded soldier after chewing Simbi’s and Mia’s money in billions. Amalawi tichenjere nawo abusa onyengawa.

    1. No facts at All, many Malawians like cooking up stories just to make their names dirty! You cannot claim to know debts of every individual you idiot. You will die a poor man speculating about other people’s debts/riches.

    2. Zoonadi izi ndimbava zimenezi muyembekezere chani kwamunthu otenga katapila mkumazitcha president zaugalu basi

  9. now Iunderstand . Even the Mias are in the same situation with Lodzani but Mia has promised to shield Roza Mnilizi in return that Loszani should not shame Mia for the loans

  10. The problem is ma magistrate, ma Sherrif amabakira a katapila chifukwa a katapila amanyemela akagamula kapena kulanda katundu. And if things reach court it means the victim is cash strapped. So these corrupt court pipo take advantage.
Olo ku polici. Upeza commishoni yusufu ndi msilamu koma upeza akumubakira wa katapila. Nde chifukwa kamuzu anabana katapila as it is designed for failure from the borrower and free high earning from the lender.

    1. Good question indeed. Does he pay tax to the government????? If yes well but if not then he is a crook that must not be entertained. And Mr Chihana how desperate was he that he should agree to take 5million inorder to pay 10million. That is insane

      1. It’s not like E Kabuli went hunting for Chihana to borrow. It is Chihana who sought what you are terming as illegal services so athane okha basi with the help of the courts.

    1. Tsopano mumati atani ngati zinthu zitasokonekera. Ambiri amaona ngati Chakwera awapatsa ma unduna kuti athe kubweza ngongole mosoavuta. Chihana was full of confidence that he would be given a Ministerial position for him to swim in luxuries but alas! Things did not go the way he anticipated. He should brace for more trouble as time goes.

  11. Kupusa. With all good securities, why not get a proper loan from high street lenders/banks? And these loan sharks charging such exorbitant fees must be arrested and such practices stopped. Why did you do with the money anyway? Pay crook Bushiri?

  12. Chihana was banking his hope on alliance. He had hope he will be given a ministerial post. Joyce Banda ruined it when she asked him to confirm he was still the leader of Aford as rumour were all over that he was in South Africa at Bushiri’s. The fact that Chihana denied being with Bushiri, that had also had an impact as Bushiri could not go on to support him. Mwambi walero. Mgwira Kuwirii zinampulumuka. pawiriri pawiri…..

  13. Uchindere! Only the crooked deal with katapilas, in my not-so-humble opinion. But in Malawi, “respected” folks like Chihana, Viola, and a certain current cabinet minister whose name shall remain unmentioned “to protect his privacy “ had their cars — even official cars — confiscated by the katapila underworld.
