Analyst tells MCP-UTM alliance to name presidential candidate
A political analyst has told the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM Party alliance and its partners to come out of its cacoon and announce its presidential candidate in the Constitutional Court sanctioned presidential election on July 2.
Latim Matenje says the delays by the party to officially unveil its presidential candidate will negatively affect preparations for the polls for the alliance.
“This will have a negative impact on the alliance preparations for the elections. They need to come out in the open and tell their supporters who the presidential candidate is. This will prepare the supporters psychologically,” said Matenje.
The submission of the nomination papers will be on 23rd and 24th April which means the alliance will have to name its torchbearer by then.
MCP and UTM announced their alliance at a glittering event in Lilongwe where MCP president Lazarus Chakwera and UTM leader Saulos Chilima signed the dotted line of the agreement.
But Chakwera and Chilima avoided any indication on who will lead the alliance.
Even details of y agreement have been kept under wraps although it is highly some speculated that Chakwera will be the torch bearer in the election.
Chancellor College political analyst Professor Happy Kayuni also said Chakwera will likely lead the alliance in the poll because of the popularity of his party over UTM Party, which is less than two years old since its formation and has only four members of parliament unlike MCP with over 40 legislators.
The opposition alliance includes Malawi Forum for Unity and Development (Mafunde), Alliance for Democracy (Aford), Freedom Party, Umodzi Party and People’s Transformation Alliance (Petra).

Chilima is popular than UTM, MCP has strong political base, even if MCP doesnt form GOVT, it will not die but these tribal and family PARTIES can not survive if they are not in GOVT.

And who is the running mate of President Arthur Peter Mutharika in their alliance with UDF that you are only appealing to the MCP-UTM alliance alone?
APM is the presidential candidate for DPP/UDF. There is no doubt about that. But the MCP-UTM alliance has two presidential candidates – Chakwera and Chilima.

I doubt whether anyone will vote for DPP just because of who is going to lead the UTM/MCP alliance. We all know both skc and chakwera will be on the ticket and they will lead the next government.

By not announcing who is to lead the alliance, there is a semblance of calm especially from Chilima’s UTM camp which is expecting that Chilima will be on the ballot.
The Alliance will consult former Mtendere Secondary School teachers and students to find out who was well behaved as a student between Chakwera and Chilima. The winner will lead the Alliance. One of the former Mtendere Secondary School student Esenhower Mkaka is expected to
lead the enquiry team.

Chakwera is trying to avoid the question of who is going to lead the alliance with the view that such appeases Chilima and Mia – and therefore, this will hold the alliance together for the time being. The problem with this strategy is that the rupture he is avoiding will happen and its impact will be devastating.
Sadly this alliance comprise individuals with bigger ego for leadership and they I know it all mentality. Chilima thinks he is wiser yet he is a political novice and MCP just want to ride on his back so that he takes them to victory. The sentiments which were expressed by Nkaka to Steve Duwa suggests that the party still harbour grudges with him over the 2014 loss. It is people like the evil Nkaka who are putting spanners in this alliance.
We the people of mzimba in pursuit of happiness and free enterprise and after getting tired of begging for development projects from apm, do hereby secede from Republic of Malawi. Viva freedom Party viva!!!
While they wait, the world is moving. Their friend the president of freedom Party seems to have abandoned the alliance already he is now leading the calls for the independence of ‘formerly ngoni but now tumbuka’ Republic of mzimba.
