Bushiri assembles 3 top lawyers to fight extradition in Malawi court as presidential aide Lucius show support

Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church is leaving no stone unturned in his quest to seek justice with the recent move being assembling top notch Malawi lawyers to fight his extradication to avoid being sent to face trial in South Africa.

Theu: On Bushiri’s legal team
Lusungu Gondwe: To defend Bushiri
Noel Chalamanda (r) among the lawyers
Lucius Banda: Prays for Papa
Bushiri had met former Attorney General Ralph Kasambara to advise on setting up formidable legal team

Nyasa Times has confirmation from Bushiri’s spokesperson Ephraim Nyondo that the ECG leader has appointed prominent private practice lawyer  Lusungu Gondwe from Ritz Attorneys at Law as lead lawyers, Noel Chalamanda from Knight and Knight and Bright Theu from Nicholls and Brookes as the legal team in a long-shot strategy

The team will work with Bushiri’s South African lawyers to solidify his quest for justice in the current continued debacle of cases on his head.

Bushiri, a prophet known for his “miracles” and wildly extravagant lifestyle, was granted bail in South Africa where he lives, in a case of alleged fraud and money laundering. He is co-accused along with his wife, Mary Bushiri.

And following his exit to  his native country, Malawi, in breach of strict bail conditions, South Africa has since  issued an arrest warrant for a controversial millionaire preacher, Katlego Mogale, acting spokeswoman for the elite police unit known as the Hawks, confirmed in a statement.

The couple’s bail has  also been cancelled and they will each forfeit the 200,000 rand ($13,000) they had individually posted.

South Africa has  since initiated a process to extradite them from Malawi.

But Bushiri is determined to put a fight against his extradition as he  claims had fled South Africa as he feared for his life and that he would not get a fair trial.

Meanwhile, Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera’s special aide on youth, Lucius Banda, a well-known musician-cum-politician, has taken to social media to show support to the prophet.

Banda posted on Facebook: “I pray for you and your family Papa. Unlike Simon Peter to Jesus, no amount of trouble ion your shoukder shall make me pretend not to be your friend.

“In a time like this very few people bother to hear our side of the story. I have been there seen it all. As for me, I believe in leaving it in God’s hands cause He only is the best judge of all matters. ..”

There was also support from member of parliament from People’s Party (PP) of former president Joyce Banda, Ackson Kalaile Banda who posted a message of support to the preacher  who has investments in the mining, telecommunications and luxury sectors.

Qatar-based Malawian trained lawyer Timothy Nundwe also commented on his Facebook page: “The Malawian cashgate crook (Limumba Karim) was partying in RSA after skipping bail. Some of you were quiet. Don’t scream too much [on] Bushiri.”

Karim died last week with Zimbabwean socialite Ginimbi in a fatal accident in Harare.

  1. This guy knows the power if money desiguising as power if God. He has skipped bail condition as such he has two cases to answer. What is he afraid of if he is innocent?

  2. When Joyce Banda was on the run from CASHGATE South Africans provided her refuge, she lived a comfortable life for years, had a nice house in an exclusive neighborhood payed by South African Billionares, why didnt they extradite her to Malawi then?????????

    1. Are you comparing Bushiri to Joyce Banda? Are you serious? Bushiri has a case to answer as many of his followers lost money in a ohony investment

  3. I don’t comend RSA for their continued bullish showings in handling of other sovereign states. But for those raising issues about the cashgate who SA failed to repatriate back to Malawi to answer charges, did MW actually raise or request his arrest or whatsoever?. However though if we keep the law be the law it sounds not harsh for me, mind you papa was living lavishly in SA without concern for his home country. What sympathy are you talking about? Until when did he need MW? R100m without a R1m project in Malawi? Not his church in BT. Well, my unbiased opinion let him face the law and that should be a reminder for the old saying, east or west …. , also pride comes before… . How stupid are we Africans and especially Malawians sometimes that we should be easily taken for granted for people who feel they have made it in life. USA only stays stronger because they believe home is best and they talk home. Us we go out and forget home and expect to be burried home when our times come. No ways, what are we teaching the younger generation, to honor or despise their country? . None is above the law at least that’s the saying in the world

  4. Of all Malawians living in South Africa, why only target Bushiri as having overstayed? As developed as they are, how long does it take to know someone is committing such crimes? Malawi is a sovereign state. The key function of a state is that of protecting it’s citizens in exchange of some of the natural individual liberties. If this Govt behaves submissively to the killer South Africa, it will mean that we are not only poor economically but that we are impoverished mentally, politically and strategically (leadership problem). That we encourage independence of state functions/institutions should not be an escape door for leadership failure in handling this simple problem or else tell me that a state President in Malawi has no responsibility. Malawi is not a paradise, we are only practising to walk there one day. Protection of the body is essential for the flourishing of the spirit. Ooh, am I preaching?

    1. I am a South African who has lost R380 000 on an investment scheme that Bushiri was running . The money was my retirement savings that I have worked for 16 years. There are hundreds of us that have lost , some have even died because heart problems related to their loss. I am a law abiding person that believes/believed that Africans regardless of their countries can corporate to create great wealth and hence i supported Bushiri even though he is Malawian. Families and innocent kids almost all African are shuttered and nothing is said about our original please of seeing justice done for us. Is this how Africans should treat each other. Yes we have xenophobic people in South Africa but 99% of us are not and hence there are so many pastors from all the world that have following in South Africans. I was hoping that Malawian people will prioritize supporting poor people but I was wrong as I see many blaming South Africa not realizing the pain that has been caused. If indeed Bushiri has safety issues , he would have gone to the Malawi’s embassy as is a norm in many countries when such even occurs. The man has for years crooked us poor people and our tears will not come down for nothing

      1. I hear you but south African’s you like quick money too much some things are too good to be true, you would have known that, did you ever heard or seen any verse in the Bible that Jesus was getting investors from church? You can say Bushiri is not Jesus but the teaching says we have to be christ like, so my Brother that R380000.00 just forget about it sorry to say, your country should have had a system in place to protect vulnerable people like you.

  5. Maloya adye zaulele za Bushili atilandenso zibwenzi zathu. Mxiii. Go rot in hell Bushili and your stupid loyas!

  6. Even if Bushiri can be represented by the best lawyers in the world, South Africa’s economic and military might compared to Malawi will make it easy for them to literally walk into Malawi to arrest him. Remember how Americans flew into Malawi to arrest amwenye they suspect were involved in September 11 attacks?
In addition South Africa is just too important to Malawi so much so that Malawi govt can’t risk jeopardising its diplomatic relations because of one person.
Abusa bwereran ku SA mukaimbidwe mlandu mwachisomo mukawina. Zomwe mukupangazi mungochedwetsa mlandu komanso ndekuti simuzatulukanso mMalawi muno chifukwa dziko lomwe mungapitelo you will be arrested on behalf of South Africa govt.

  7. Avoid retributive utterances. Be supportive to own blood. What about Lumumba Karim who despite having cash gated in Malawi was safely staying in the killer South Africa without being repatriated back to Malawi, his home? Their I’ll treatment of out state president adds salt to the wound. South Africans are stupid because they disdain other nationals’ civil liberties, too much for that matter. They kill us. They have continuously killed us. Why do their intelligence not depend on correct and perfect information? Using guessing at that level? They are bullshit! They are dunderheads who employ physical ware as a means to abide by international requirements, stupid, I hate them.

  8. Pathetic, very pathetic. A well known Catholic faithful like Lucius Banda openly clapping hands for Bushiri just because of money. And this is despite the fact that he is now a presidential “advisor” who would do well to keep quiet on the issue lest he embarrasses the Tonse Govt in this delicate matter with potential to cause a diplomatic rift between MW and SA.

    1. A Malawi mzakhala akapolo a anthu enadi mpaka kale kale, south Africans are killings Malawians day and night without valid reasons so why supporting them?
I would rather be on the side of my fellow Malawian than victimising him or her.
South Africans hate foreigners too much

      1. 2 wrongs don’t make a right. Yes xenophobia is bad. When this man was chewing the money, it was him and his wife. His problem is not our problem. NO.

    2. Nothing pathetic here dude …learn to appreciate what others are doing…..u don’t have the mandate to judge others.. Judgement belongs to Jesus

  9. The escape has the hallmarks of the involvement of the Malawi government.

Zibwana kwambiri this government. Proper schoolboy tricks by this government.

  10. When Ritz attorney join the WhatsApp group you just know .. kalipokalipo…Kodi siaja anakatenga injunction midnight that was overturned nkhani ya Mpinganjira? Obviously their ethics are questionable….

  11. I get how some people think that this individual needs support with his fugitive issues in South Africa coz he’s a citizen of Malawi. I get how some people worship this individual instead of worshipping the true God, but let’s not forget that he still has a case to answer in Malawi as to how he ended up with four passports and how he ended up with a diplomatic passport. I hope these criminal issues are not gonna be overlooked in the name of supporting a fugitive just coz he’s a Malawi citizen.

  12. please can Malawi dont get abused or manipulated by Bushiri please!!! unless pali corruption/ bribe?
why should our taxes go into the court people payroll ? kapena sindikuzivetsa ndine.
Why should we get involved as if bishili amapanga za ukatakwe ndi dziko la malawi?
asieni SA alongosole kaya amufuna apite basi. sitikuziziwa ife. koma ngati ma Mw polititians alowelamo izi nde zotaitsana nthawi tak8ng a wrong turn kusiya milandu ya n goneragonera tili nayoyi. do not brainwash malawians tikadali otsutsudwa zilonda sozinapole ndi momwe dpp inkatiendetsela coseta ok. milandi yathuyi mufuna izafe ngati njoka yozimilila mmadzi mboni zose zitafa?????
za bushili zitaeni a Joni athane nae okha. PLS SAVE OUR TAX MONEY. misajijilike with this fresh issue yet we got our cases that has lasted ages with no closure. Hey let’s not take advantage on one another here. FOLLOWING

  13. If these two were 100% innocent of the crimes they were accused of, there is no way in the world they would have jumped bail. Just no way! Now they’re putting our govt in a big fix. The South African govt has all the cards (and the two jokers) in this ordeal — make no mistake about it. If not handled wisely (ie if these two aren’t booted back to SA expeditiously to face the music), Chakwera’s post-election honeymoon could be very short lived.

    1. You have not leaved in South Africa. This is a xenophobic attack. Bushiri is not the first black foreigner who made it to be chased from South Africa. They always find a reason to strip away everything from you before kicking you out. The mistake he made was to flaunt his wealth. The Malawi govt should resist being arm-twisted by the SA govt. Leave Bushiri alone and let him fight off any attempt to have him extradited.

      1. True my brother , these noise makers have not been there and they no nothing about south Africans on how they hate foreigners though Africas.

There will be no diplomatic hiccups btwn Lilongwe and Pretoria. Ramaposa aided the escape of Bushiri if u don’t know,

What ever is in the Media is just a cover up that President Ramaposa is Angry , he knows every move Bushiri took.

So keep dreaming that Bushiri will be extradited to RSA.

      2. I agree with you and I am actually surprised by some Malawians who are fighting their own.Now is not the time to fight your own country man…its a time of showing solidarity to your own, whether they are guilty or not.South Africa is never going to treat the Prophet fairly….They never listened to him when he reported about exhortation and other charges against the hawks so why should they listen to him now.Wake up Malawians…cant you see that you are allowing the South African government to bully you.Fight for your own.Somebody has to investigate HAWKS before the Prophet goes on trial…South Africans are BULLIES.

      3. How did he acquire his wealth?
In which country did he acquire his wealth?
Why didn’t he acquire his wealth in his native country?
SA government is certainly acting within its rights to try and get him back into the country where his so called wealth was acquired.

    2. I agree. If they were 100% innocent sanakathawa no matter the circumstance. Bushiri picked a fight he thought he can pay his way out. But here we are….Asova. honestly I don’t feel sorry for him

    3. Its your problem that you don’t believe their reasons why they escaped . Its their right to protect themselves from you haters

  14. Currently as Iam commenting now, South African parliament portfolio committee is discussing the issue of Bushiri’s escape. Chakwera has been put at an awkward position, drawn as an accomplish in the escape of Bushiri. There is a very irreparable diplomatic relationship damage by Malawi’s own making. There is a high probability that Chakwera aided Bushiri to escape as cited by Lekota who even went to an extent of disclosing that Bushiri financially sponsored Chakwera’s election victory. I fear for Malawians living in South Africa; they will be scrutinized and many will loose their jobs through the revoking of their resident permits/citizenships.

  15. Mutengeletu makobili, otherwise akupondani. Mind you, the guy is TOP CROOK. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

  16. The love of money is the root of all evil indeed! These clowns masquerading as lawyers are being led by the chief judge shopper RK, who smelt this dirty money from a distance and planned the whole escape! This moral decay must be stopped. We are not a nation of thieves! Bushiri must go back and prove his innocence. What do they preach at his church????
