Chakwera finally moves to Kamuzu Palace
President Lazarus Chakwera has now moved into a 300-room Kamuzu Palace, the official residence of the Malawi Head of State.
His Special Assistant, Sean Kampondeni, has confirmed the development.
The delay to occupy Plot Number One was caused by renovations that were being undertaken at Kamuzu Palace.
His moving to Kamuzu Palace comes a month after his election.
Since his election as President of the country, Chakwera had been operating from his private residence in Lilongwe’s Area 6.
The Persian-style brick-built palace, dominating a hill above Lilongwe, is part of a 200-acre estate which includes a school and a supermarket. It was built in 1975 by former President for Life Hastings Kamuzu Banda, known for his luxurious tastes, but he stayed there only briefly.
Kamuzu’s successor, Bakili Muluzi, himself criticised for over-spending, refused to occupy the palatial residence , calling it an “obscene extravagance”, and lived in Blantyre.
The State House then was housing Parliament until Bingu wa Mutharika had moved in and later Joyce Banda who renamed it Kamuzu Palace and Peter Mutharika continued to live in it until he was evicted by Malawian voters in the fresh presidential elections.
Landlocked Malawi is one of the world’s poorest nations; most of its 18 million people live on less than $1 a day.

When shall he tell us where to line-up for the 1 million jobs? When shall our grannies begin to get the K15,000.00 per month? When shall we start eating three times? Where are the bullet trains? When shall the salary for civil servants be raised?
Let’s just wait for what our cabinet is planning,since they took over the position this year, they need firstly to clear all mistakes being done by evicted government until they are fit enough.lets pray to our CABINET to see changes

This is just a waste of resources. Why move into a 300 room mansion? For what?I know previous Presidents did the same thing. But is it really necessary? What are we (as a Nation) benefiting or achieving by housing the State President in a 300 room Mansion? Please turn this building into something else. It could be a Hospital, Presidential Hotel, Military and Govt offices or University. No single family needs to live in this Mansion.

That’s why people will always fight for this position and sooner or later him Chakwera and his vice will start fighting because Chilima is looking forward to occupy this beautiful mansion. Remember I wrote on this same page that as long as Chakwera and Chilima are from different political stages oneday they will differ and this will cause them to easily split. Mostly alliances politically does not work positively any mistake done from any side will can cause conflicts. This I write on this day the 1st of July 2020 and give it time of 6 months from now things will start happening. As for me I wish them well they are our chosen Leaders let’s pray for them that the devil should not use them to further destroy this nation all what we need is peace and development across our beloved nation. Residential facilities for Malawi presidents should be reduced to one and others be changed to either higher learning institutions or hospitality facilities.

Thanks for reminding us about another idiot to rule Malawi and that is Bakili Muluzi. He almost destroyed the beautiful palace and it was all in ruins. Worse still Bakili almost ruined the Capital Hill. Bingu had to change everything and brought sanity to the state house. Unfortunately, someone who promised to make Malawi look like Singapore did very little. He has a my benefit of doubt but this guy was only there to promote tribalism and corruption. It is unfortunate that Norman Chisale cannot come in the open to become a state witness. He thinks the Bible he is carrying will save him. We cannot judge him but the man amassed unexplained worth from the state house. A Chakwera please know that the house belongs to Malawians and it is for someone who is elected. There were no significant renovations at all. Laz, being a typical Malawian notwithstanding his religiosity, had to make damn sure there were no “zithumwa” anywhere around. I dare anyone challenge this theory!!!
Kamuzu did his best. No wonder Muthalika crying and forgot to construct his own home.
The house was not built by Kamuzu and with Malawi’s money. It was a gift from the head of the Commonwealth hence the source of funding for it’s construction.

If it were me, I would sell this state house including the many others. Poor as it is, Malawi doesn’t need such an expensive house just for one family. Should be very expensive to run such a massive house and the many other empty state houses.

This palace is an extravagance that is an insult to the majority of Malawians who can barely afford a tiny house to live in. It should be sold off and turned into a hotel or conference centre. The status of our President should not depend on such luxurious living. We ought to assess and judge a person by their deeds, not by what they possess. ‘By their fruits you shall know them’, says the holy book.
