Chihana’s diplomatic push: Malawi and Mozambique vow to deepen ties

Malawi’s Second Vice President Enock Chihana led a high-level delegation into crunch bilateral talks with Mozambique this week, in a bid to strengthen ties between the two neighbouring nations.

Neighbours unite: Chihana leads high-level talks with Mozambique in Durban

The behind-closed-doors meeting took place on the sidelines of the 46th SADC Summit in Durban, South Africa, bringing together some of Malawi’s top political figures for face-to-face talks with Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo and his delegation.

Chihana was flanked by two of his most senior colleagues, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation George Chaponda and Minister of Defence Feston Kaupa, underlining the significance both governments placed on the discussions.

The talks zeroed in on strengthening bilateral cooperation and deepening regional collaboration, with both sides using the meeting to address matters of shared interest between the two nations.

By the end of the discussions, Malawi and Mozambique had reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining strong neighbourly relations — while pledging to work hand-in-hand to promote peace, security and socio-economic development across the wider Southern African region.

The high-stakes engagement comes as both countries continue to deepen cooperation on issues of mutual interest, with officials on both sides signalling their intent to keep building on the relationship in the months ahead.
