Escom draw benefits Moyale to be leaders first round

Moyale have all the reasons to walk tall after finishing top of the TNM Super League log table in the first round with 25 points following Escom United’s one all draw with Red Lions on Sunday.

The Mzuzu-based soldiers who thumped Mafco 3 – 0 on Saturday to go top were praying that the electricians at 23 points then should lose or draw for them to stand a chance of topping the charts to pocket K250, 000 from the sponsors.

Escom did the soldiers a favour when they failed to take advantage at the Kamuzu stadium.

The first half was scrappy with both teams failing to stamp their authority to dictate proceedings.Escom failed to beat Red Lions to climb top

Noel Mkandawire and Heston Munthali laboured in vain to find an opening as the Kelvin Katema led attacks yielded nothing on the other end.

The second half started on a promising note for the two sides but an own goal by Malumbo Gondwe in an attempt to clear the ball brightened Escom’s prospects.

The soldiers worked tirelessly and their efforts paid off when Vilipo Mhango surged into the 18 yard box before he was brought down for a penalty. On the spot, Mphatso Ngwira made no mistake to level matters.

Escom had man of the match Charles Swini in goals to thank as the Zomba-based soldiers continued to pile pressure on the electricians.

Coach for Escom Charles Manda was frustrated that his team blew up the chance of finishing top but said the battle is not yet over.

“We didn’t play well and failed to utilise the chances we had and it’s now time to go back to the drawing board to prepare for the second round, “he told Nyasa Times.

His counterpart Collins Nkuna said a point was not bad considering that they are coming from three consecutive losses. In Lilongwe, Blue Eagles beat Embangweni 1 – 0 thanks to a Chikondi Mpulula goal.

At the end of the first round, Ishmael Thindwa remains the top goal scorer with 12 goals followed by Mpulula and Gastin Simukonda on 7 goals each.

A total of 224 goals have been scored in 105 games. 254 yellow cards and 14 red cards have been flashed to players in the first round.

Super League action in the second round returns on 15 October.

How they stand, the top 5 teams.

1. Moyale 25 points

2. Civo 24 points

3. Escom 24 points

4. Mafco 24 points
