First Lady gets Merck’s special recognition: Govt says pride of Malawi

Government has congratulated First Lady Gertrude Mutharika for her receiving  special recognition from Merck Foundation for their contribution in the fight against stigma relating to infertility and also enhancing access to medical treatment for infertility.

Madam Mutharika together with seven other African First Ladies received special recognition from Merck Foundation at the  6th edition of the Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary conference being held in Accra, Ghana.

The Malawian First Lady  said she is proud to be part of an initiative that is relieving sufferings of women who are considered infertile.

“I have spent my first three months as Ambassador for Merck Foundation in Malawi championing for a multi sector approach to addressing infertility challenges.

“Through Beautify Malawi, I have engaged ministries responsible for information, health, gender and education so that they can mainstream interventions that can bring lasting solutions to infertility,” she said.

Speaking on the sideline of the meeting, M government spokesperson, who is also the Minister of Information and civic education Mark Bottoman said the award has come at the right time when Malawi government has partnered with Merck Foundation through  Beautify Malawi Trust run by the First Lady.

Bottoman said it is not surprising that Malawi has been awarded because the initiatives the First Lady has been working tirelessly under BEAM Trust with passion and vision in creating a health nation.

Speaking before she presented the award, CEO of Merck Foundation who is also the  Co-Chairperson of Merck Africa Asia Luminary; Dr Rasha Kelej applauded Malawi for making great strides within the shortest period since  the partnership was  launched three months ago.

Malawi has been awarded alongside the host First Lady of Ghana, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Liberia, Burundi just to mention a few.

Merck Foundation helps first ladies to build the capacity in embryology and awareness campaign on initiatives being implemented by African First Ladies.
