Freak tragedy: Malawi young couple die after being struck by lightning during sex in garden

A 12 year old girl and a 16 year old boy both Standard 6 pupils at Dzenza Primary School in Lilongwe have died after being struck by lightening while making love in a maize guarden, Malawi Police have confirmed.

The pair were on a romantic time in the maize garden   when the tragedy struck

Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sub-Inspector Labani Makalani identified the deceased as Patricia Guwe and Anderson Yohane who both hails from Mzondo Kachimbwinda Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chitukula in Lilongwe.

“The two were involved in a love affair and were chatting in a maize field when rain with thunder started. Their parents reported the matter to us and our officers visited the scene of the incident before taking the couple to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) where medics confirmed they died of lightening,” said Makalani.

Meanwhile, Makalani has advised the general public that during thunderstorms, if they are outside, they should seek refugee in a car or grounded building and if away from a car or building, they stay clear of water bodies and tall objects like trees.

“For those inside, they should avoid taking a bath as well as washing dishes and should also avoid using landline phones, television as well as other appliances that conduct electricity while it is raining” said Makalani.

There is no absolute protection from lightning, but measures can be taken to reduce the risk of getting struck and the injury severity.”

  1. Why printing photos of the dead then Nyasatimes?
    That’s not nice.
No paper in the World does that.
Shame on Malawians for displaying the dead to the aworld like this.
    Shithole

    1. That is unethical. and they don’t respect human dignity .
I have seen them in many way they don’t edit their pictures. Several times, they violated people’s rights but no one talked about…thanks for reminding them about human dignity and rights.

    1. IWE FIDERUS MIYOYOOO !
Munthu wopanda manyazi , this is a sad story ndiye IWE you are uttering stupid and useless statements. It shows kuti mumuthu mwako munazadza Manyi ndi mamina.Very useless guy and I will not be wrong to suggest that ‘unatulukila limodzi ndi Manyi pobadwa iwe ‘
      Wandikwiyitsa kwambiri

  2. So sad and not for me to judge – LORD have mercy.

Now, deaths due to lightning on the increase in this season, are we doing enough to civic-educate the people on this? For example, do we have on our TVs, radios and even newspapers some small slots/clips of information on this? If yes, what is the depth and manner of coverage, and in which language/s? If not, what are we waiting for?

Second, is the information we give the people on this enough? How about walking in the rains ON A RAISED GROUND? How about LEANING ON A WALL/STANCHION(SUPPORT POLES or NSANAMIRA) even inside one’s house? How about WATCHING TV or USING Wi-Fi, laptop or computers when its raining or during lightning or thunder? Besides, do we give explanation, for example, that this is on the increase because we have depleted our trees (natural paths of lightning) and so we should embark on serious replenishing of trees?

Lastly, why, I should ask, did those entrusted with preparing syllabuses for our secondary school (Physics) remove this topic from MSCE and put it only at JCE (where there’re no national examinations)? Good People, wouldn’t it have served us better including it all through, right from standard 1 to form 4, in incremental measures? I suppose the same approach would apply in issues natural disaster: our students should know them right from standard 1.
