From one academic, 15 books: Malawi scholar’s astonishing feat wows education chiefs

An eminent Malawian academic has stunned the education world by launching a staggering 15 books in a single day — an extraordinary body of work that leading figures say could reshape education across the continent.

Education stakeholders, academics and top officials packed into a Lilongwe venue on Saturday to celebrate the remarkable achievement of Dr Zizwa Msukuma, whose sweeping collection of publications tackles quality assurance, governance and education reform head-on.

Guest of honour Dr MacPherson Jere, of Emmanuel University, didn’t hold back in his praise, hailing the sheer scale of the accomplishment as something far beyond an ordinary book launch.

“This is not just a mere achievement to produce the books that are speaking to each other,” Jere declared, insisting the publications represented nothing less than an investment in Malawi’s future.

“It is important to follow this because it is building the future. The future of this country, Malawi, is in writing real things that can leave a legacy,” he said.

Jere praised the depth of insight Msukuma’s work offers into the state of Malawi’s education sector, while issuing a rallying cry for greater collaboration between public and private institutions to guarantee students access to high-quality schooling.

He went further, calling for sustained policy dialogue among educators, policymakers and institutions — arguing that only through robust, ongoing discussion could Malawi hope to develop the standards needed to drive genuine reform.

Taking to the podium himself, an emotional Dr Msukuma described his extraordinary body of work as nothing short of a “roadmap” for transforming education systems not just in Malawi, but right across Africa.

He explained that the 15 books offer strategic tools designed to support reform in critical areas including teacher quality, governance and accreditation — while championing sound policymaking throughout the sector.

Collectively, the publications aim to spark fresh discussion on how education systems can be strengthened and made more responsive to the needs of learners, teachers and wider society — arriving at a moment when calls for stronger quality assurance and better learning outcomes have never been louder.

The star-studded launch also received a major financial boost, with Goshen International University — founded by famous Prophet Shepherd Bushiri — contributing a generous K1 million towards the event.

Adding to the drama of the occasion, copies of the books were put up for auction, with bidding kicking off at a striking K110,000 — a clear sign of just how highly Msukuma’s contribution to education discourse is being valued.

But as Dr Jere was quick to remind guests, the true test now lies ahead.

The lasting impact of Msukuma’s remarkable 15-book collection, he said, will ultimately be measured not by Saturday’s celebrations, but by whether its ideas are genuinely discussed, adopted, and turned into real, practical change for Malawi’s — and Africa’s — classrooms.
