Heartbreak in Namibia: Junior Flames Fall to Amajita in COSAFA U-20 Final
The Malawi Under-20 National Football Team has narrowly missed out on COSAFA glory after a 3-0 defeat to South Africa’s Amajita in the finals played at the University of Namibia Stadium on Sunday.

South Africa struck early and decisively with goals from Mzimela (4th minute), Mlondo (66th), and Segkoto (75th), sealing the win and denying the Junior Flames their first COSAFA title since reaching the final in 2003.
After an inspiring 2-1 semi-final win over Zambia on Friday, hopes were high among Malawians for a triumphant finish. But the Junior Flames were unable to match the intensity and pace of the South African forwards, while the Amajita’s defence shut out key attackers like Mwisho Mhango.
Despite the loss, head coach Milias Pofera Jegwe praised his players for their courage and determination throughout the tournament.
“The game was tough. Nobody gave the boys a chance, but they defied the odds to reach the final. This has been a powerful learning experience, and the boys have grown mentally. It’s a strong foundation to build on,” said Jegwe.
Football analyst Pickford Kamanga echoed the sentiment, urging authorities to preserve and invest in the team.
“The boys impressed throughout the tournament, apart from the final where they were a bit off. But this is one of the best youth squads Malawi has had in years. FAM must make sure this talent is developed and not lost,” he said.
The last time Malawi reached the COSAFA U-20 final was in 2003, making this year’s campaign a promising step forward despite the heartbreak.
