JB identifies international market for Malawi legumes

Former President Joyce Banda said she has identified ready market in Dubai and Equatorial Guinea for legume and vegetable export by women under Market Women Initiative (MWAI) in Mitundu, Lilongwe.

Speaking to journalists after addressing surrounding villagers at her farm in Mitundu, Lilongwe, she said, women including men are encouraged to grow legumes and vegetables for export.

“I will assist them to sell their legumes both at local and international markets so that they generate more money for their living,” she said.

She added that most of the women identified to do such small scale agri-business include widows and the underprivileged.

Banda also announced that she will donate blankets to orphans who are cared under the initiative at the farm, give them porridge to raise their nutrition status, train and pay salaries to the caregivers.

She however urged Village Headmen around the area to identify a project in their villages which will be fully sponsored by her.

Joyce Banda Estate in Mitundu, Lilongwe started in 2011and has been engaged in various social responsibility activities.
