Lengthy jail for sexual attack on disabled girl
The Blantyre Magistrates Court has convicted and sentenced Evance Edison to eight years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a disabled girl.
Edson who hails from Satimbatiyawo village T/A Mthilamanja in Mulanje was arrested on February 17, 2014 and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police prosecutor, Elton Chakhaza told the court on Monday that Edison defiled the 12-year old girl after taking advantage of her condition.
“The girl is deaf and dumb, and on this day she, together with a certain boy, visited the accused house in Misesa Blantyre. The accused took advantage of the girl after the boy had left for an engagement event within the neighbourhood,” explained Chakhaza.
Chakhaza told the court that the boy caught Edison red-handed upon returning to the house.
“The boy informed the girl’s mother who rushed to the scene of the incident. After inspecting the victim, they noticed white substance on her private parts,” said Chakhaza.
Medical report from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) one-stop centre revealed that the girl was indeed defiled.
Senior Residence Magistrate, Edina Bodole slapped Edison with eight-year jail term.
In mitigation, Edison pleaded for leniency since he is the main breadwinner for his family aside from asking for bail.
