Malawi Electoral commission has new CEO – Kalonga

The Malawi Electoral Commission has a new chief elections officer. He is Willie Kalonga.

Kalonga served at the EC for so many years and was once head of electoral services and rose to the rank of deputy chief elections officer. He replaces David Bandawe who was sent to the diplomatic mission in Zambia.

Kalonga became the successful candidate after rigorous interviews which attracted five candidates.

He confirmed his new job and said he started work on June 1 2012. As chief elections officer, Kalonga is the chief executive officer of EC.

His appointment comes after President Joyce Banda instituted a new commission at the EC. The previous commission had its term expired.

The commission is challenged to run credible elections in 2014.

The commission is headed by Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Anastasia Msosa who contract expired in September this year.
