Malawi extends voting to a third day

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has extended voting to Thursday in centers that have failed to vote for the past two days due to irregularities.

Chief Elections Officer of the Malawi Electoral Commission Willie Kalonga said during a news briefing at the national tally centre Wednesday night that voting will continue in seven polling centers that failed to vote previous two days due to unavailability of ballot papers.

The Centres include Namame, Mpapa and Mchekera, Msinde ground and House of Hope in Lilongwe.

“The printer has assured us that has completed printing ballot papers. Some will be distributed to the centers in Blantyretomorrow while others will be airlifted to Lilongwe,” he said.

Kalonga said the voting in these centers will start at 11 am and closes at 6p.m.

He also disclosed that the Commission will start releasing official results “soon” saying they have now fixed the problem which affected the result transmission system.

He disputed fears that the delaying of releasing the results is tantamount to rigging.
