Malawi govt has no information on drug trafficking lady in Hong Kong -Minister

Government says it has information on a 29-year-old Malawian woman who is facing drug trafficking charges in Hong Kong, saying this makes it impossible to intervene.

Fabiano: We have no information

Minister of Foreign Affairs Emmanuel Fabiano told parliament that unless the government has the information and a report on the matter, it is difficult to do anything.

“My ministry has not received any information, we don’t know whether she is Malawian or not,” he said.

Lucy Nkasela faces death penalty after she was caught with 2kg of cocaine.

Her case has been failing to take place in the courts because of lack of interpreters.

Home security minister Nicholas Dausi said the government has now engaged an extra gear to crack down on drug traffickers in the country.

Dausi told the parliamentarians that the police have gone flat out to sniff out all drug traffickers both local and international.

Dziko lomwe lagwira munthuyo, ndilimene limapereka information ku embassy ya dziko linalo, if the person in question has any identification linking him/her to that country. I doubt very much in this case, if the lady in question has been found with any Malawian identity. It is also possible that his ministry has requested for that information but he has not received any information from his counterparts. But the truth will come to the open.

Dull minister. Where do you want the information to come from? Can’t you ask her relatives right and form a case with the Chinese embassy in the country? Act now before she is treated like she has no county of origin. Kupusa bwanji?

Such a sad news to hear. there is a problem of territorial jurisdiction that Malawi as a nation cannot act as it could have done should the case be opened here in Malawi. It all depends on each and every nation’s law, hence, the application of the Hong Kong law on Lucy affects the case although there might be some legal measures to take for her to get helped. Maybe trying to claim her back, AS FAR AS IT BE PROVED THAT SHE IS A Malawian, by Nationality principle that she should get back and be charged as according to… Read more »

Hon Fabiano, I used to have high respects in you based on your education background and the Unima position you held. However, based on this issue, you are a very incompetent minister and you do not deserve to be in that important and strategic ministry. The foreign affairs as a ministry was supposed to be in the forefront to ensure that you get the information confirming if the lady is Malawian or not. You cannot address the parliament like that. That simply shows that the Malawian govt is not doing anything on the matter and does not care. Regardless of… Read more »

Hey mr minister, any person outside her/his native country if not neutralized is identified by the passport he/she holding. The lady is said to be Malawian that means she possesses a Malawian passport. Ngati anagula passport that’s our chance to bring her home to help us stop the vice.
