Malawi Muslims hail jailing of Mesho over provoking song

Muslims in the country are hailing the jailing of Andison Alfred Chipwaila popularly known as Mesho, saying this will send a strong message to artists who compose anti-religious songs.

Secretary general of Muslims Association of Malawi Alhaji Twaibu Lawe said this after Chipwaila was slapped with a two year jail sentence by a magistrate court whilst his producer Stephano Emmanuel was handed down a one year jail term for for their respective roles in the making of the now banned song Mizikiti Ichoke.

“The song caused panic among Muslims in the country. The verdict is fair,” said Lawe.

However, some people on social media feel the sentence was harsh.

“A community work sentence or suspended sentence could have been better since the song is now banned,” reasoned one on Fac book.

This is the first time they a musician has been jailed for his music.

The song questions why Madrassahs were introduced in the country and why Muslims do not eat pork.

The song further demands the demolition of all mosques in the country and that everyone should eat pork freely.

Chipwaila, 29, comes from Binali Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Nkanda in Mulanje while Emmanuel, 25, comes from Samson Village, T/A M’biza in Zomba district.

As a matter of fact what he did was wrong but to forgiven ndi mbali ya boma not anyone nor Muslim organization itself because what he did ndi kubweletsa chipolowe in the peaceful country like Malawi. Islam is a peaceful religion ever, and always advised for peace and respecting none Muslims accordingly. And killing someone because of insulting the religion not true but insulting our prophets and the Creator nothing wrong. Sometimes other ppl do ignorantly but ena amadziwa koma nchipongwe ngati zomwe muyuda amapanga just like propagation really permitted for us to panel beat such idiots.

    So please stop blaming Islam for his illness actually is what he deserved, and what the court of laws did is definitely protecting him from angry ppl not only Muslims but entire societies.

  5. This country is really idiotic and backward. You mean this young man will spend 2 years in jail; and tax payers will spend cash paying for his food, prison warder etc just because he composed a song that was in bad taste against a religion that claims to be peaceful and to know forgiveness! how many times has the Christian faith been attacked by moslems and Christians themselves? Has the magistrate been influenced or what? even the moslem official who is celebrating the jail sentence; is he not ashamed that he represents so heartless a religion? Some have killed albinos in this country and nothing has been done to them. Someone sings a song and is incarcerated for 2 years. Is the justice system in this country sane.? Can’t one of our lawyers handle an appeal for the boy pro-bono? I wish I was a lawyer ndithu! #freethemmusicians

  6. Am a Christian but I support the punishment he has received. We do not spread the gospel through insult or religious wars. And I must say I have a friend who is in ISLAM but the way this guy did it, I wouldnt do it to my friend Tambulasi. Elsewhere, there are high levels of Islamic militants, why should we in Malawi join the violence?
    Bravo our Justice system!

  9. I see nothing wrong with this song, Muslims are good on provoking other religion but they are not being a rested why???
    Just release the artist now, until Muslims start respecting other religion it’s when we will also start respecting them but as of now nooo ways.
    They think they are Holly but most of them are murderers , rapist, fornicators and etc.
    What kind of belief that preach to kill non Muslims or rape them??? Very bad indeed to have such religionists our midst.

    2. You got it wrong bro!! Muslims are not what you think they are. I can only advise you to do a though and bias free theological research. It is wrong to base your arguments on the negative perception of the western media, which is always bias when reporting about our peaceful religion. Islam is peace and it always teach us to love one another and to leave peacefully with other people. I cant deny a fact that there are some Muslim individuals just like there are some Christian individuals who are perpetrators of violence in the name of religion. It’s high time we came together as Malawians in tackling ethnicity issues in our country. Please let us focus our precious ideas in developmental issue to achieve a competitive advantage over our neighboring countries that are now enjoying bull economies compared to us.

  10. So islam leadership can not forgive this young man. They should have prayed to the court to forgive this young man but what did we see this grouping was adding fire to the case praying for stiff punishment, eeeish what a religion.

The boy is indeed wrong but the punishment is too harsh to him.Religious people should teach us on how to forgive.Sometimes we teach wrong doers by being lenient to them.Suspended sentence would have been enough.Killers are moving freely out there why not giving light punishment to this young man?

  12. This was a small case. No need for a jail term but a suspended sentence. Neither does he deserve a fatwa. Moslems must learn to forgive and not think of vengence and jihad. Mesho is a diminutive young man who struggles to earn a living and was thinking of producing a song that would attract big audience and bring him some cash. He isn’t a threat to Islam. He is a plebeian and a moron. On this case Moslems should have proven that they are peaceful and tolerant. Islam like other religions teaches forgiveness. Suppose Mesho had altered similar attacks against Christianity would there be a call for his blood? The time he and his producer had been in custody was already a big lesson to him and others. Unfortunately the case came during wrong time (political campaign period) when Government wanted to attract some votes on the matter. Government should have rather protected Mesho as the Indian and British Governments did for Salman Rushdie, the author of Satanic Verses when a Fatwa was declared on him. Music and Arts Associations should have saved Mesho from custodial sentence but instead they all repudiated him

We don’t forgive deliberate wrong doers, we are allowed to kill anybody who dare to insult Muslims.We call them kafris and once we have killed them, allah has promised us everlasting life in the next life that’s why every muslim was wishing to kill mesho as a way of entering jhannat (paradise) easly.Even me i was looking for MESHO too and 2 year prison sentence seems to be like a play coz i was expecting him to have more than 20 yrs jailed.

  13. Sad,the guys should have just been schooled on the dangers of being overzealous when composing songs,give them twelve cane strokes in public and set them free.custodial sentence is a loss to society and government.

      1. In a mature democracy one has a right to offend. Religion is a creed and should be open to any criticism, attack, or challenge. This is sad for our democracy!

        1. Mature democracy does not mean allowing people to offend and be left scot free. Mature democracy means respect for the rule of law while exercising our moral rights, I suppose. And democracy is not about provoking others and nor is it about violating the rights of others.

        the gvt is trying to protect its citizens by punishing whoever incite violence.
