Malawian man jailed for sexual assault on step-daughter
The Blantyre Magistrates Court has sentenced to four years Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) a 32 year old man for defiling his step-daughter.
Patrick Watiba who hails from khugula village T/A Mbawela in Thyolo has earned himself a jail term for failing to control his ‘boiling blood’ and constantly defiled his step daughter aged 15 (name withheld).
The girl, according to medical report had been pregnant on several occasions of which she aborted.
The report further reveals she aborted her pregnancies at Banja la’tsogolo where she lied to have been impregnated by her boyfriend, thus after been advised by her step-dad.
Chief Resident Magistrate Ligowe slapped Watiba with prison term after being found guilty and was convicted accordingly with Defilement contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.
The victim, according to Police report tendered in court, revealed to the law enforcers during interrogation that had been sleeping with her step-father on multiple occasions and that had been forced to abort several times.
“She told her mother that the father was asking to sleep with her but she could not do anything. At some point she got pregnant and her father took her to Banja Latsogolo for abortion. However when told about the abortion, the mother only said she could have kept it,” states the report.
The matter was brought to court after the victim got tired of her step-dad’s ill acts and had revealed the issue to her uncle who later took up the case with the law enforcers.
Jailed for impregnating 14-year-old
Elsewhere, the Kasungu First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 20-year-old Muhamad Lada of Njoloma Village, T/A Makanjira in Mangochi district to 11 years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL); for sexually ssualting and impregnating his 14-year-old girlfriend.
The court heard that the convict first met the girl (name withheld) in August this year while she was coming from school and proposed love to her but the girl rebuffed him.
However, she is said to have eventually accepted Lada’s proposal on his fourth attempt and the two had intercourse twice between August and October when the girl later discovered that she was pregnant.
She was in form one at Chankhanga Community Day Secondary School and was staying with her parents at Gundani Village in the area of Senior Chief Kaomba in the district about 1.5 kilometres away from the school when the incident happened.
“The girl kept staying with her parents without them realising that she was pregnant until yesterday when they observed some changes on her body and upon quizzing her she revealed that she is pregnant and that Lada was responsible,” State Prosecutor Aphas Banda told the court Thursday.
Banda further told the court that police arrested Lada when the girls’ parents reported the matter to Kasungu Police Station on Wednesday.
He said the girl was referred to the District Hospital where the pregnancy was confirmed.
Lada pleaded guilty to defilement prompting the state prosecutor to pray to First Grade Magistrate Hens Kantchere to consider pronouncing a stiffer sentence on the convict saying cases of defilement were becoming so common in the district.
Kantchere sided with the state and slapped Lada with 11 years IHL, a sentence he said was meant to serve as a warning to would be offenders.—(Additional Reporting by Mana)
