MEC approves Zodiak, MBC TV as official broadcasters for elections results

The Malawi Electoral Commission has approved Zodiak Broadcasting Station and Malawi Broadcasting Station (TV) as the official broadcasters for elections results and other communication from the Commission.

MEC’s chairperson Maxon Mbendera told media in Blantyre on Thursday that the appointment of the official broadcasters does not stop any other radio station from broadcasting elections results.

He said those who will be announcing results should be telling their audience that theirs were not official as the official and recognised results will only be announced by the appointed official media houses.

“The two will be used intensely by the Commission to communicate messages about elections. If other radio stations broadcast something different from what these two radio stations broadcast, then the public should know that the contrary is not the official stand of the Commission”, says Mbendera.

Mbendera says the two broadcasters will work under the direction of the Commission and will abide by the provision of the broadcasting licences, the Media Code of Conduct on Reporting Elections and relevant legislation on elections.

“In appointing the official broadcasters, the Commission looked for stations with national geographical coverage, national listenership cutting across various social and religious interests and the technical capacity”.

Mbendera said Commission also looked for stations that have proved to be professional and neutral in programming.
