Mining resumes in Phalombe after Optichem agree with communities over social responsibility

Mining has resumed at Thundulu in Phalombe after communities stopped the operations because the mining company was allegedly not honouring corporate responsibility promises.

Optichem is mining the area for fertilizer production.

A member of parliament in the area Denis Namachekecha confirmed that mining operations have resumed after Optichem and the communities agreed on their misunderstandings.

The communities asked Optichem to stop the mining until the social responsibility issues were sorted out.

Council and company officials said they were happy that the issue had been resolved amicably after tense of weeks.

Optichem is the only fertilizer manufacturer in the country.
