Nankhumwa defends Mutharika over DPP leadership

Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice president Kondwani Nankhumwa has swiftly leaped to the defence of party president Peter Mutharika who is facing calls for his resignation following his dismal performance in the presidential poll.

Mutharika is facing pressure to resign following revelations of K1.3 trillion economic plunder and corruption in the country during his administration, dismal performance in the June 23 court sanctioned presidential election and old age.

The former president is 80.

But Nankhumwa, speaking in a program on Zodiak on Sunday afternoon, said the DPP constitution provides that a party leader should serve a five-year- term of office.

“He has just served one year. Let him serve the rest of the term. He can only leave office after five years at a convention,” said Nankhumwa.

He parried away criticisms that the former is too old to steer DPP to new political heights, saying Mutharika is strong enough to lead the party despite his age.

But a political commentator Wonderful Khutche said Mutharika should step down and a new leader must be elected if the party is to bounce back in government in 2025.

  2. The old man needs to go and all those around him.the party needs new face and that means new faces.i oldman is the reason the party is in opposition today.as a leader he is very weak and easily manipulated. He also shows traits of cowardice.

  3. His leadership led to DPPs downfall. If you are thinking of reviving DPP, then all nkholokolo MUST go starting with him. I can give you names that helped him to his downfall: Chaponda, Mchacha, Mussa change goal, Mphepo, Dausi, Jeffrey, Chimulirenji, Daza, Kamuyambeni, Musowa and many more.Do it now and rebuild with new brains failing to do so will take you 15 years to come back.

  4. Nankhumwa you too, just like Atupele, are being used by these savages. Remember how you got into that position. The World knows you were not first choice.

  5. Wonderful Khutche!!! LOL .. Nakhumwa knows the truth, APM is old, you really want to be led by a 90 year old person?? Please DPP be realistic for once..

  6. Bouncing back in 2025? I don’t think so. Corruption and impunity were too much to be forgotten so soon!

  7. Most people dont know the DPP vice president for the South! Outside people might look at him as supporting the aging president, but underground he is decampaigning him. Remember how he has been sidelined by the same mapwiya to extend of going to pick chicrycry. Lero mdizo nkhalamba ichoke atero eni chipani! Cementgate king

  8. That’s why you lost the election. An NGC full of bootlickers, busy listening to a mere presidential bodyguard. Madeya okhaokha basi.

  9. Nankhumwa is just doing his job…the mouth is uttering different from what his mind is saying. Ka wisdom kalimo mwa uyu. Afuna a Dad azitule pansi okha

  10. Nankhumwa, some of these things should not be said just for the sake of. DPP is full of educated pple except you, why should we have an 80 year old thief as a party leader. You are killing that party, with your baseless backings.

  11. No ambition Mr Nakhumwa, you and your party are living in denial. ati he is strong enough? Shame on you..

  12. Whether they like it or not, DPP knows deep down in their hearts that a new leader is needed pronto. One should be elected in less than a year to re-energize the party.

Henry Chimunthu Banda would’ve been the ideal candidate, unfortunately he is not Lomwe.

  13. Nankhumwa do not cheat yourself Mutharika must go.The sooner the better for ,we can not wait for another 5yrs .Come on the guy is not fit to be a leader as he is totally confused.

  14. He can continue to be the leader of the Destruction Pathetic Party as long as he will be able to run the the party whilst imprisoned – be in in jail or user house arrest.
