Nkhata Bay DC escapes jail for contempt of Court
Nkhata Bay District Commissioner Fred Movete and four others have agreed to respect a Mzuzu High Court ruling ordering them to immediately reinstate Chief Makhambira in Nkhata Bay District.
They also agreed to allow Chief Makhambira to exercise his powers until the Court’s determination of the substantive matter.
In their consent, which is contained in an order signed by their Lawyers, they also agreed that the motion for committal to Prison for contempt of court be withdrawn.
The five stared imprisonment in the face for an unspecified length for wilfully disobeying an injunction to immediately reinstate Chief Makhambira in Nkhata Bay District in September 2013.
Chief Mkhambira filed for a motion for contempt of court to have Movete, Chibwana, Chakwanika, Yafeti Chigowo and Dywell Chirwa.

Chief Makhambira was sacked because he irked
President Joyce Banda ordered the dismissal of the Chief for publicly pointing out that the maize she promised for the district’s hospital never, came.
The Chief also accused the President of favouritism in the elevation of Senior Chiefs saying many that she has elevated to senior Chief where from the southern and eastern region.
A few days after the accusations, Movete wrote Makhambira informing him that government had decided to relive him of his duties.
