Peter Mutharika: That’s my man, ‘most tolerant President Malawi has ever had’

President Peter Mutharika is a man of development, a statesman—and this is no news.

Mutharika: Malawi has shown progress in achieving macro-economic stabilisation

Many other people have already said it in the past.   And so, in agreement, I will, largely, only harp on the same string.

In his five-year reign, the President has done a lot for this country.

He has built many roads both in rural and urban areas across the country.

He has also connected over 330 trading centres to the national grid through Malawi Rural Electrification Programme (Marep), lighting up the mood of the people in those communities.

He has also implemented the Green Belt Initiative and Salima is now producing sugar.

Mutharika has also built many technical colleges and expanded university campuses.

The list of projects his administration has started and completed is  too long.

Speaking when he commissioned the New Kamuzu Barrage at Liwonde on February 18, he said:  “In five more years, Malawi will be a beautiful country, connected with nice roads everywhere”.

Surely, the beauty and benefits nice roads bring cannot be overstressed.

On the economic front, the President has brought down inflation from around 30 percent to a single digit. His administration has also halved interest from about 45 percent.  The exchange rate has also stabilised and government has introduced social cash transfer programmes to uplift the poor.

In New African Magazine of June 2018, International Monetary Fund deputy managing director Tao Zhang writes: “Malawi has shown progress in achieving macro-economic stabilisation following two years of drought, with a rebound in growth and inflation reduced….The authorities are making efforts to reduce poverty”.

In 2014, I attended the opening of Parliament.  As legislators on the Government side chanted Boma! Boma! Boma! on his arrival in the House, I looked down briefly, with tears in my eyes, imagining the great responsibility addressing numerous socio-economic problems the country was facing would entail.

That time, I understood the meaning of ‘so help me God’ Mutharika during his swearing-in ceremony at the High Court in Blantyre.

Four and a half years later, however, it is amazing to see what he has achieved in a short time—mostly without donor support. This phenomenal success is proof of prudence in the management and use of resources.

The President has also demonstrated great statesmanship by preaching love and living a life of tolerance.

During his rallies, he usually advises Malawians to love one another regardless of tribal, political and religious differences.    Tolerance is important not only to avoid social conflict but also for national development.

On another front, APM is not only a gentleman, he is kind-hearted and slow to anger.

Some people disguised as human rights have crossed the boundaries and gone into sheer impudence.  They have insulted and provoked the President, but he has hardly reacted.

This, to me, also demonstrates maturity of character.

Some firebrand politician, speaking on Times Television’s Tchutchutchu chat show in January, said:  “Mutharika is the most tolerant President Malawi has ever had.”

Indisputably, his consciousness for development, statesmanship, and maturity of character strengthens his qualities as the father of the nation.

When it comes to development projects, I like the speech the President made during the John Chilembwe Day commemoration in Chiradzulu on January15.

“In the next five years, Malawi will never be the same,” he said. “As a country, we have begun the journey from poverty to prosperity.  And the choice is yours, whether to continue or not.  But as for me, there is no going back.”

  1. APM has done nothing on this earth
    DZIPITANI MWADYA MISONKHO YATHU MOKWANIRA!!!!!!

  2. Mutharika has done nothing good to Malawians,,,olo zitukuko zomwe amaonesa pa MBC its for the Bingu Wa Mutharika(may his soul rest in peace)

  3. Henry, you’re right, the most tolerant when it comes to Ben Phiri’s remarks on women, resistance on Chaponda’s arrest and rampant corruption.

  4. please there is a difference between Tolerance and Cowardice, hence you may mistake cowardice for tolerance.

  5. Aperson who is backing mutharika can be described as mad people who dont know what they are talking and thinking though they can praise him we cant change our mind we are uprooting him in 3 weeks time to come

  6. Yes!!!! he is one of the true great Leaders of Africa the only President who has managed to change things within 5 years – Surely, just within 5 years but he has done great things – There was a President who ruled for 31 yrs and there wa another President who ruled for 10 years but very few developments were seen. In 2004 God gave us the hero Bingu wa Munthalika just within 5 yrs of his first term although with difficulties from the opposition he managed to change the face and history of Malawi. He was not able to continue doing his miracles of development because the traitor who was against his works rose against him – similar to what Jesus Christ faced in the Bible. His own people were against him untill he died half way to his second term……..Unfortunately,.poor Malawi could not read why God gave us this great Leader he was also the great leader of Africa and most brave Leaders around the World came to admire his Leadership but unfortunately we lost HIM.
But still thanks unto God that he lives to fulfill his promises mainly for his own children who are called by his NAME – for two solid years this country was given to a woman and the fruits of that woman were seen. the few children of God who were very much concerned with the situation cried to God in prayer and he answered them and God gave back the rule to DPP under the leadership of Arthur Peter Muthalika who is the real brother to the late Bingu Wa Muthalika. Again he did this for a purpose and God’s purpose – God’s mission shall never run in vain he will make sure that Munthalika’s appointed time to rule this nation is fully completed and am sure he will make it upto 2024.
What is happening now also happened in the bible history but what everyone should know is that you can not challenge what God has instituted – you cannot fight the chosen leader of God, and I repeat it is very impossible. The true son of David tried to do the same but he ended up losing in an awkward manner. (YES ONLY GOD REIGNS HE IS OUR MASTER)
Fellow Malawians let’s learn to respect the leaders that God has given us and God shall bless this Nation, mostly we ask why are we poor? Our late President Bingu Wa Munthalika – may his Soul RIP – said, ‘this land Malawi is not poor but the people are the one’s who are poor mainly spirtually & in mind’. The Bible say’s seek the Kingdom of God first and his righteouness and ALL your desires shall be fulfilled. We need to be thankful unto God for the PEACE that he has given us in this country – just look around and SEE what is happening around the world and you will be amazed how the innocent blood of people is running like streams of rivers people being butchered like animals/ LORD FORGIVE US FOR WE DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH LOVE/PEACE YOU HAVE BESTOWED FOR THIS NATION – it’s my sincere prayer that you open up our eyes that we should see what you have stored for us. & LET YOUR WILL BE DONE ON 21st MAY 2019 ELECTIONS that’s my prayer in JESUS’ NAME….

  7. Yes, definitely the most tolerant – of corruption, bribery, tribalism, nepotism, poverty, sickness, poor education, sub-standard infra-structure, etc. etc., the list goes on and on. The country needs APM as President like it needs a whole in the head! One can only conclude that the writer of this article was handsomely paid to write it or has benefitted personally from the DPP government.

  8. In short, the man has stolen more than he has delivered. No wonder 95% of his infrastructure has been sub-standard; community colleges, roads – you name it. The are all substandard. The community colleges are not even modern facilities.
Red Card to him for the love of Malawi

    1. And the airport looks like a bakery with a chimney. Surely can you call that an international airport??

    1. Where is integrity in K85m worthy of vehicles received from a police gate suspect. What about K145m deposited into his personal account? You columnist please dont take us for granted. If you have been bought , dont think that DPP can buy us all.

  10. For God sake that country is 4th poorest country in the world. What development are you talking about. Stop this nonsense . You have minute understanding of issues. Do you really have good comprehension and grasp of the meanings of the concepts (I) development (ii) statesman?. That’s the problem when sycophants masquerade as analysists. Shallow minds or what mchacha the terrorist calls chicken brain

  11. This is what we call professional journalism, quality piece of writing based on real facts while some people are saying things just to spice-up their masters political ambitions. We can proudly say that some writers are professional indeed, the one who has written this is the best example of patriotic and professional writers.

  13. He can be a good man but doesn’t mean he is a leader. 5 years can contrast a swat analysis of his delivery. He has failed to govern Malawi socially, economically. Farewell Sir!

    1. Is it really tolerance or laxity? Or better still, clueless! People are breaking laws by having “Ana adadi ” car number plates. Yes, he tolerates. Chaponda is caught red handed in chimanga scam, yes he tolerates. ESCOM blatantly hires a demolition company at K675 million leaving others who quoted K135 million, oh yes tolerates. MACRA boss blatantly runs a parastatal like a personal company, yes he tolerates. The list is endless. True, he is tolerant. Or, clueless?
