Phoya fight for teachers better working conditions

Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Blantyre Rural East, Henry Duncan Phoya  (HDP)  says Malawi teachers should be well renumurated and deserve pay hike .

The former minister called on government to give teachers good working conditions, that’s including providing accommodation for rural teachers.

Phoya when hesaid this during the launch of three teacher’s house projects at Namikate, Namwanje and Makomano primary schools in his constituency.

“Teachers are devalued yet they make who the leaders of this country are. You talk of Ministers, M.P’s, Chief Executive Officer and everybody who is on top position. They had to go through some education,” said Phoya.

Phoya: Teachers deserve good working conditions

“Teachers in rural areas have to succumb to living far from town, teaching more classes and long hours and yet they have to walk long distances to get to the school which decreases the quality of time they spend with the learners,” added Phoya.

The 2.5 million houses which are under the Local Development Fund (LDF) will be managed by community members as decentralization entails.

Phoya encouraged the community members to take charge of this development project as it will improve the education standard of their children.

“It is very disappointing to hear that others are deliberately refusing to help in molding of bricks and organizing sand so that the M.P. should have problems at the district office in bringing the development,” said Phoya.

He bemoaned the mind set of associating  MPs development projects to campaign .

“It’s very discouraging to hear others saying the project is a campaign tool for an M.P. and therefore must do all the ground work required from the community,” said Phoya.

Phoya said in some areas, community members actually made him buy brick because they had previously shown district council supervisors bricks belonging to an individual and not villagers and turned to the M.P. when the money was given to them for the project to start.
