PP calls for Goodall resignation: Malawi Finance Ministers accused of ‘lying’

The opposition Peoples Party (PP) has demanded Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe to resign for misleading the nation on recent salary hike for President, Parliamentarians and cabinet ministers.

Over the weekend Gondwe and other government agents were forced to clarify and justify the pay hike amid economic crisis, and President Peter Mutharika and his vice, Saulos Chilima’s decision to defer their pay rise.

PP Publicity Secretary Ken Msonda told Nyasa Times Gondwe has failed nation and the President for claiming that former president Joyce Banda was the one who proposed the salary hikes.

“We are calling for the immediate resignation of Hon Goodall Gondwe for misleading the nation that the recent DPP salary hikes for State President, his Vice President, Ministers and Members of Parliament was proposed by Dr. Joyce Banda during the Peoples Party led administration,” said Msonda.

Msonda added: “We are extremely disappointed that the man we highly respected has turned into such a liar. From these lies which Hon Goodall Gondwe is saying it is clear that he is the one misleading the State President.”

He said it was not true that Banda ever discussed salary increments for the State President, Vice President, Ministers and Members of Parliament.

His argument hinges on what Banda and her vice Khumbo Kachale made while in power by donating 30% of their salary to charity.

Msonda said  Gondwe is now challenging that government is collecting more money to pay the increased salaries then there should be pay hike to all other government institutions demanding salary adjustments; ACB, Judicially, Teachers, the University Support Staff and Students as well as the Healthy sector.

“Otherwise if government is not able to pay these people,  we call upon the immediate resignation of Hon Goodall Gondwe,” added Msonda.

According to Msonda, Gondwe must step down because under his administration Malawi economy is failing to tick.

“He is failing to find solutions to a litany of strikes currently underway at the judiciary, University of Malawi and ACB. He must resign and stop peddling lies about Joyce Banda,” he told Nyasa Times.

On Monday, Gondwe re-iterated that tough economic tides had forced Mutharika not to affect the hike saying that, after all, the hike was the former government’s master plan.

    The rise in civil service ranged from 80% down and the president and his vice and ministers are in that category of civil servants. Why are you only accusing innocent people.   22. The Minister of Finance should not envelop himself into pointless, baseless excuses. I wish he commented on NACgate, on backgrounds of civil servant, i
    ncluding judiciary, university ACB, and other government institutional demands for salary hike. If not the minister should spend more time devising
    mechanisms to solve the nation’s financial crisis. He said the budget on salary raises were passed in the parliament, when and which parliament?
    He is demonstrating the state of confusion he and his boss are in. Let’s pray for them.

  36. #28 you make an interesting point about the reference to the previous government. Malawi has a Presidential system of Government not Parliamntary accordingly, the concept of a ruling party does not exist in Malawi despite repeated references to this or that ruling party. So PP was not a ruling party and dd not form the previous government. Joyce Banda was the head of the executive and therefore any refences to the previious government includes President Joyce Banda.

  37. An incompetent, blundering Minister of Finance. A spent force. This old man who prepared a half baked budget cannot transform the economy. He has made life very difficult for ordinary Malawians. This is the man who reduced corporate tax by 3% and increased fees and charges by over 300%. He should resign or be fired.

    Did Gondwe say Joyce Banda or PP, are Joyce Banda and PP one and the same? If they are then PP is property of Joyce Banda and had no business being a rulling party

If what I have read is true that a Gogo Goodall Gondwe said ” Salary hike of the President, Vice President and Ministers …………..was the master plan of JB and they are just implementing such….., then indeed the whole team must resign. Just recently, they talked very bad of JB’s policies. How then could they grab this one as good? In other words they can not work on their own or put in other words ” They have lost their heads.

  61. Told you long time ago that Godall is useless. The problem with Malawi politics is we like to recycle. Since Gondwe was great in 1570s we think he will be great till jesus’ coming. For crying out loud the guy made blunders during DPP Bingus time that cost the gvt about k6 billion in tenders. And do you still remember his explanation that satisfied the Malawi nation? “I had good intention for Malawi”. On that, we clapped hands. forgave him and gave him another ministerial post, of FINANCE! How crappy is that?
