PP members’ houses torched in Mulanje: DPP accused

Unknown people  suspected to thugs hired by opposition Democratic Progressive  Party (DPP) on Saturday evening torched houses of two members of the ruling people’s Party (PP) in Mulanje.

The houses, which were burnt to ashes, belonged to Mulanje central constituency members, Pilani Chimpembeli and Alice Julio both from Sapuwa Village, T/A Chikumbu in the district.

Confirming the incident, PP deputy publicity secretary, Ken Msonda suspected the incident to have been masterminded by ‘immoral’ opposition members of DPP.

“Peoples Party would like to condemn in its totality such undemocratic and barbaric acts of violence. PP leadership believes that in a democratic dispensation people can agree to disagree but still leave together peacefully,” said Msonda.

He said such undemocratic tendencies, behavior and line of thoughts have no room in a multiparty democracy, and sounded out a stern warning of retaliation if the incidents continue.

Msonda challenged that PP have the ability, machinery, capacity and resources to hit-back and make the suspected opposition members lives miserable.

“We would like to strongly warn those that are involved that if they continue with such barbaric acts of violence, PP shall have no option but to retaliate to protect our members, supporters and followers. Those people involved will live to regret the consequences the rest of their lives,” warned Msonda.

He was, however, quick to say “But we believe in national building and intra-party democracy. People’s Party leadership and ideologies believes in democratic values and principals; respect of our Republican Constitution, Human Rights, Rule of Law and Good Governance; as pillars in a multiparty democracy”.

The party has since called upon the police to investigate the matter with the urgency it deserves and bring to book those involved.

Mulanje district is believed to be one of the stronghold areas for DPP.

Meanwhile, nobody has been arrested in relation to the incident, which sends bad precedents for the country’s multiparty democracy and especially at the time the country is preparing to hold tripartite elections next year.
