Protecting political power amid suffering of Malawi citizens
As 2019, the year of elections in Malawi draws near, political campaigns are heating up as people realign themselves on positions of their choice. However, President Peter Mutharika and his government should be reminded that apart from the campaigning, they still have a job to do—running this country. Therefore, they should not just spend more time in protecting their positions as seems to be the case at the moment.
Currently, Malawi has countless issues which need urgent attention by the President and his government. The most urgent issues are the life-threatening alleged terrorism by DPP cadets and the next urgent issue is the strong rumoured blood suckers in Mulanje, Thyolo and other areas in the Southern Region.
Now, looking at violence by DPP cadets, it is now common knowledge through the media, that DPP cadets raised hell in Rumphi at the Tumbuka Cultural heritage. They chased away invited dignatories from opposition parties. They threw stones randomly that some people had to run away from the venue even before the function had started. In the end, so many people were hurt with blood gushing wounds. It was so scaring to say the least. It was so disgraceful that the cadets had no respect for the chief and the Minister present. The anomaly of the fracas by the cadets is that the President was busy in America trying to woo investors to come and do business in a peaceful Malawi, his own cadets were busy destroying the peace he proudly talked about. Which investors can dare to come here where youths roam around with pangas and stones ready to strike?
The boat on armed cadets was missed during Bingu wa Mutharika’s era, when cadets went round the streets of Blantyre warning people about how lethal they can be. If they had been rebuked that time, they would have been tamed by now. If DPP does not correct the violent nature of the cadets, people might even conclude that their behaviour is a party policy.
The danger of not checking the cadets is that it can lead to non-stop skirmishes when cadets face their equal as it once happened in Karonga where 18 cadets were reportedly beaten and some were hospitalised.
Political leaders must be reminded that Malawians want to live in peace and that violence does not pay. Most Malawians can remember well that during the debate about Bakili Muluzi getting a third/open term, there was so much violence by UDF young democrats (YDs) against those who were against extended term for Muluzi. Despite the violence, Muluzi failed to get additional terms. It is unfortunate that DPP cadets want to change the way of life of Malawians and start living in fear.
Meanwhile, as if the recent terror by cadets is not bad enough, there are reports about bloodsuckers in parts of Southern Region. Whether this is a mere rumour, what is evidently clear is that it has brought a lot of fear and that people no longer sleep in their houses. Worse still, those people alleged to be accomplices of bloodsuckers are reportedly being attacked and their property destroyed by people in the community. There is no stability in the area. Malawi is already losing out since the American Ambassador Virginia Palmer has said American volunteers will not be posted to the area because of bloodsuckers.
Finally, it must be mentioned that protecting political power aside, President Mutharika must find immediate solution to what is stated above in order to bring sanity and peace in the country. He should not leave the job to so-called task forces which might not find solutions at all.

I wonder why characters like Santana get charged and perplexed at an issue that is sending chills in people’s spines and that is sending shockwaves to potential tourists.
This issue about blood suckers needs strong government’s attention and professor Peter Mutharika has to emerge from the cave he is hiding and show leadership quality expected of him. After all, Peter Muthrika really dreamed and aspired for the presidency-remember at one time in Mzuzu, this so-called Yale graduate exercised pomp, ego, and confidence in becoming Malawi’s president when his brother was at the helm of leadership. He boarded a helicopter to grace a function while he was cabinet minister and all was well with him. In short, he behaved like a president.
Now, Peter Mutharika is no longer a minister but a president of a country that is in dire need of guidance, security, progress, and a renewed hope. The country expects its president to lead from the front and not from behind. Blood sucking issues are security issues and can be detrimental to the country’s progress due to the fact that tourists will get scared to hear of their lives being at the mercy of blood suckers. Has the president shown leadership and so far tackled this issue head on? nope. Is it wrong for journalists to raise concern and awareness to the public? nope. Then what the hell is Santana and some other DPP followers getting mad about? Trying to protect or shield the person who is failing his job as an employee of Malawian Tax payers and who is their source of bread and butter.
I will not be afraid (It’s not tribalism or regionalism) to exhibit my opinion on the beliefs and practices of people in the Thyolo-Mulanje belt. Those people have very strange beliefs not common to the rest of the country. Is it primitiveness or Satanism or witchcraft? I guess it’s all of them. However, those people need sensitization, support, and protection from government. Their existence is a treasure to the nation.
Santana, do not be embarrassed at the expository presentation of unbiased journalism, but instead, embrace it as an antidote to myopic and mediocre leadership which DPP enjoys. The rest of us say NO to such leadership even if it costs us a million dollars.
Leave Emily Mkangama alone and deal with your failures in government. You guys don’t have the balls to lead us to prosperity. You need to relinquish power even if it means to the gutters. Oh yes, the country can be governed better by Oceanic pirates than you. You are just learning to understand government- give us a break.
Surprisingly, your arrogance has reached the top of the Appalachian mountains and you are biting the fingers that are feeding your wide mouths. You aren’t even close to the Fidel Castros of today because I don’t see toughness in you but just stubbornness or mutation of some senile characters. The author or writer of this article doesn’t sound biased in anyway as far as I’m concerned, she has just raised the obvious which indeed needs urgent attention from The Head of State & Government. When it comes to violence who can condone violence? A normal human being can not celebrate his neighbour being mauled by a lion because he hates him? When that lion finishes with your neighbours where is that lion gonna go? About the blood sucking issue, already lives have been lost innocent or not but human lives have been destroyed. Those people who have died in the hands of mobile justice were family people who have left a big gap in the lives of their loved ones. All this because of the way the government is handling this issue. Whether it’s true or not but this needs government attention to get to the root of it & address it. Peace is all that is required.

We have heard about people whose houses are destroyed for being suspects of being blood suckers. But have you, Emily heard or seen someone being sucked? Mkamanga I thought with your Tumbuka type of wisdom you would write this your trash with a new info of telling names of the people who are have been sucked. You are coming with empty stories which politicians are good at. After hearing of who the suspects are on this issue we now want to know who the victims are. So we expected you, Emily to come with something new not the same old stories which have no basis. The problem is that our type of politics in Africa and Malawi in particular is that of kupakana manyi. It is the type of Mkamangas who are good at kupakana manyi. I advise you Emily to go where you have heard about this blood sucking rumour and find out the names of the victims and come again on this page with the names, failing which, you better shut up your wide mouth.
