UDF’s Zitha Kaphwiti Banda killed in car crash

Zitha Kaphwiti Banda, opposition United Democratic Front (UDF)  member of its national executive committee and shadow MP for Mchinji East Constituency, on Monday died from a road accident.

His sister, Tapiwa, confirmed the death of Kaphwiti Banda.

The car accident happened at Lizulu in Ntcheu, on the M1 Road, as he was traveling to Blantyre, where he was scheduled to attend his party’s national executive meeting on Tuesday.

Unconfirmed reports reaching Nyasa Times indicate that there were six people in the car, five adults died on the spot and an infant who is in critical condition.

UDF spokesman Ken Ndanga said the party has been shocked with death and said UDF president Atupele ‘s Phalombe rally on Wednesday will not go ahead.

Ndanga said with Zitha, Malawi has lost one of the prominent political leader.

“Our thoughts are with his family. He will be greatly missed,” said Ndanga.
