UTM’s Kabwila arrested for ‘inciting violence and intimidating judges’

Malawi police on Saturday arrested former Salima North West legislator Jessie Kabwila, who ditched main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to join UTM, on allegations of inciting violence and intimidating judges in the ongoing presidential election petition case.

Kabwila: In the cooler

Police confirmed Kabwila was arrested following remarks she is alleged to have made on Thursday during  demonstrations against the Police.

Kabwila reportedly warned to deal with Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Jane Ansah, and those protecting her.

She also warned to deal with judges should judgment in the presidential elections case favour the ruling party.

The Constitutional Court has until February to determine the case in which Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera and UTM Party’s Saulos Chilima are disputing the President Peter Mutharika re-election in May 2019 polls.

  1. MAKADETI MWAMANGA KABWIRA NANGA ZATULUKAZI BWANJI SIZOMWE AMADANDAULA.SAMALANI. MULUNGU AMAONA.KWACHULUKADI MAKADETI.SOVANI ZA MSUNDWE WOMEN GWIRANI OSOKONEZA MAJAGI NDI BRIBERY OSATI IZI ZINGOKUIPITSIRANI MBIRI.

  2. HRDC is busy creating monsters of tomorrow in the name of demonstrations ,teaching youths that you can steal if things are not going your way ,you can kill if things are not going your way, you can scold or insult the elderly if things not on your side ,blame the elderly for your laziness, take to the street if you are failing to think properly. SHAME ON YOU HRDC ,YOU ARE CREATING MONSTERS OF TOMORROW.

  3. Nowhere, repeat Nowhere can the Justice System allow especially Judges and prosecutors to be personally intimidated the way Kabwila-Kapasula has done. Crazy! Mommy you are Crazy!
She’s so reckless, and even the desperate UTM should have gotten rid of her, already. Like yesterday. As she has no political capital at all.
Now, her personal judgment is being rightly questioned by her admirers, including former students and the obnoxious anti-Bingu/DPP drum beaters!
She has not yet realized that politics at the national level requires tactics different from those on Campus! Means, probably she’s not capable of growing up, in the broad sense.

  4. Let the law take its course, Kabwira’s
words are so dangerous. You can’t threaten the Judges Jane Ansah is ur fellow woman, she is also working under constitution of Malawi.

  5. I don’t think whatever Kabwira said could warrant an arrest. Every citizen who wish Malawi better would say that, intimidating opposition people is a bad thing in ademocratic country. What amaze me is that whenever the ruling people does violence acts against the citizens the police doesn’t move quickly to arrest perpetrators, the police will only move quickly to arrest someone from the opposition side.If the judgement favours the ruling party, it will be like you are putting more firewood to the huge 🔥. That country is going to burn.If this is the strategy of the police to start arresting opposition figures on whatever they say is a shameful and dangerous move, coz her party supporters are watching especially towards the
final judgement. In a democratic country citizens say anything, police should avoid arresting opposition figures, this shows that our democracy has not matured enough. Using one party system strategies against opposition figures in ademocratic country it’s just unfortunate . The anger will be huge by the time the judgement is passed.Alot will be said about the judges . Please release her immediately. It is only in a one party system where citizens are not allowed to say anything but in a democratic they do say anything, people still have anger against Jane Ansah, the reason is simple she failed to conduct the election with integrity. The police should be prepared to arrest alot of citizens if our judges are bought to favour the ruling party.Police should not just arrest any how or because someone big from the top has said that.I remember Kabwira was also arrested because of whatsapp conversation, Just release her , people have been stealing money in government , the police didn’t arrest them, people killed albino people some names belong to the ruling figures the police hasn’t arrest them. This is total partisan from the acting IG. God bless Malawi.Keep it a land of peace, may be freedom is coming soon.

    1. Yes it is YOU who do not think what she said does not warrant her arrest. But WE think she has and let the law take its course. UMBULI basi!!

  6. Well done Malawi Police Service. We want peace pa MALAWI. Ma judge asaopsedwe ndi mayi wotambalala pakamwayo. Mayi wopanda banja Koma Ali ophunzira bwino. 7. Brother Samuel, malamulo a ku Malawi kuno amagwira ntchito pa anthu otsutsana ndi DPP ndi Peter Mutharika basi!

  8. Ohooo! Ndimayesa kuti malamulo adatha kumalawitu? Madzuka kutulo tanu kapena mwangodzidzimuka mugonanso? People are terorising malawi in the name of democracy inu tulo pwitiiiiiiiii.

  9. She deserves prosecution if she did utter those words against the Constitutional Court. Jessie should know that you just don’t intimidate the judiciary at any time. Her utterances were ill-advised and simply stupid. She’s not an ordinary politician – she’s a PhD holder for God’s sake!

  10. It started with comments on social media, then her Fortuna was torched and now this! Vuto la Jessie is that she talks faster than the brain can think. Her enemies, the police, are capitalising on this.

  11. Mutsikanayu is gaining more prominence than during the Academic Freedom saga. Mpaka Bingu kumvetsa Jessie Kabwila is our maverick politician with the sharpest tongue a Chinsinga amamudziwa kuti ndi Golda Meir She is a man kwambiri

  12. Let us be serious! In the 21st century and a country whose leader has told the country Malawi has a ‘democratic constitution’, we retain and use vestiges of one-party state tools such as ‘treason charges’ to deal with political opponents, very shameful. I can not think of anything anyone can say or write that can or has the potential to bring harm to this country, that is can ‘threaten the physical existence of this country’. Actually it is the shameful thievery of Mutharika and his cronies that has the potential of ‘fiscally harming this country’ and eventually ‘threaten the physical existence of this country’. Mutharika, who failed to defend and exonerate himself from ‘treason charges’ by the JB regime is now comfortable bringing ‘treason charges’ on others. So shamefully shameless individual!!

  13. Some pple will consider this as politically motivated arrest, but the truth of the matter is straight forward, she uttered unpalatable words of threatening the security of those pple which is against the law

  14. Jessie, Jessie, Jessie how many tyms have I called you . This is bot academic freedom. Your arrogance should have limits you are not above law. If you are convicted you will face problems as an individual

    1. munthu anakanika kuwina mpando wa MP azimusaka kuti atani naye, anthu akwawo anamukana uyu ANATHAAAAAAAAAAAA

Those of us who will be able to visit her please tell her not to eat or even drink their bottled water. They will will try to poison her

  16. Opposition inayamba yavomereza chisankho anywhere in the world. Kabwila and her friends tread carefully otherwise we want development in this country. DPP in 2014 when they won elections did not stay idle rather they intesified political meetings strengthening their party from grassroot despite being a ruling party likewise today thats what they are doing strenghtening their party and inu muli busy disputing the results shame nthawi ikutherani ndi zomwezo no wonder when dpp takes the mantle come 2024 as had been the case with 2019.

  17. Just wants to let people know that she is still alive. Don’t waste your time with her. She is finished. If you are called former, you are done and useless

  18. This confirms politicization of HRDC. Why do they allow politicians to speak at their demos? What positions does Kabwila hold in HRDC to be allowed to speak?

  19. Jessie Kabwila’s statement that has been circulating reminds me of the Chichewa proverb that goes like this, “kunena kwa ndithe ndithe Kabwila anadzitengera”. Does she not have the intelligence to notice that even his boss Zeze Arafat is avoiding being subjudicial by staying mum on the case? It is not that he has run out of his vile. He churned out a lot of his usual nonsense on the EU monitors report recently meaning that his mouth is not clean but still rotten and full of vile. Let Kabwila face the music.

  20. Izinso ndiye zinatu! Muonongatu mlandu inu! Tangobwererani ku chalk as zaoneka kuti ndale zakukanikani!

  21. Just release this woman. Do you think our judges can stoop so low to be influenced by these external activities such as these demonstrations marred by violence? Do you think they can be influenced by comments made by Jeffrey wa Jeffrey, Mutharika, Kabwira, Chakwera, Times Radio/TV et.al? Judgement will be made purely based on the relevant evidence. We will hear: case dismissed! Or results nullified therefore rerun! Which ever way, a partisan Democrat will accept.

  22. Last kicks of a dying DPP horse……arresting Kabwira will not intimidate anyone.

Why not arrest the president for his tantrums on podiums that he won the election free and fair when the same is being challenged in court? Is that not inciting violence?

Why not arrest the cadets who hacked mr Mayaya in broad day light during a peaceful demonstration?

  23. This case ili ngati matenda ooopysa zilibe nchito ngati odwala akuti ine ndilibwino Kapena ayi chofunika ndichoti iye alandire mankhwala. Majudge ali ndi laboratory results zolankhula za pantient zilibe nchito poti iwo amuuza kuti akudwala kapena ayi mogwilizana ndi laboratory results. Evidence before them basi. A police tulutsani report yanu ya kwa Nsundwe otherwise you are wasting time with this.

  24. KKBWIRA UJULOTA. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE.AND THE IRREGULARITIES DO NOT GIO UP TO 48%. According to mec constitutuin

WHY KABWIRI IWE UNGOKHALA CHIBWENZI CHANGA

  25. Kabwila munthu wopanda mwambo.Kabwila Mpakalelo sadziwabe kuti palibe kunena mwandthendthe?MCP sifunad zinyalala, ndiye ziyalalazonse kuthawila ku bus campony ya UTM

  26. It’s time Police must grow teeth to bite.Certain individuals in this country think they can just go away with any stupidity. This country is a peaceful country and chaos and anarchy must not have any room.Any thorn to peace and development must be plucked out.

  27. She probably just expressed what is in the peoples’ minds. People will obviously target all those involved in the mess the country is going through. In fact, the court case has given a chance to Malawians to know how elections are managed, especially the 2014 and 2019. The current suffering is a result of putting wrong leaders in power just to protect what has been looted from government and to continue with the looting project with impunity. There is anger in people’s minds and any exposure of irregularities on the elections or the judgment itself will attract violent reactions. It is a fact, not being architect by Jessie. She simply shared what is in people’s minds

    1. True let no one cheat themselves that if the court ruled differenly from peoples expectations there will be peace here. From what they gathered from the live broadcast it was established in people mind that indeed there were irregularities and announcement was made before they were sorted out. The technical aspect which the court may use to rule otherwise is of no consequence to the Nsundwe minded Malawian. One thing you need to know is that it is the Nsundwe minded Malawian who has so far felt the pain of poor leadership. Now Mtambo has schooled him that he has the capacity to demand his right to be governed properly. Kabwira is just a weal point of a pressurized tin. The shrapnel from the bustling tin will kill many.

  28. Were judges among protesters to be intimidated or were they the objects/subjects of the protests? Is talking to the police threatening judges? No wonder people view the police top brass as a DPP wing.
