Businessman drowns in Lake Malawi during friend’s birthday
Tragedy struck on Tuesday as a businessman drowned in the Lake Malawi on Chikale Beach in Nkhatabay during the celebration of his friend’s birthday.
Nkhatabay Police Public Relations Officer, Ignatius Esau identified the deceased as McDonald Chawinga.
According to Esau, Chawinga’s friend Vitumbiko Mhango had a birthday on 4 September 2016 as such they organised a party in Mzuzu.
Later, the friends decided to extend their celebrations to Chikale beach in Nkhatabay.
Chawinga who was a businessman in Mzuzu went into the water to swim while drunk and he drowned.
By the time he was being taken out of the water Chawinga was already dead.
The body was taken to Nkhatabay district hospital where post-mortem that was conducted confirmed that death was due to suffocation.
Meanwhile, the body is still at Nkhatabay district hospital’s mortuary since relatives to the deceased are yet to be identified.
