Malawi to use biometric registration for 2019 elections

Chairperson of the pollster, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC),  Justice Jane Ansah  is assuring Malawians of trouble free 2019 elections, hinting registration will be biometric as people will have national IDs provided by the National Registration Bureau.

Ansah: We will do biometric registration

She said with  biometric system, they will easily capture details from national IDs that include the contentious nationality and age.

“We are working with National Registration Bureau,” said Ansah.

“We will use their data when they finish with the citizenship registration,” she added.

Ansah said in the past names of eligivle voters were missing on the voter’s role but  that will not happen thwn the lists are electronically generated.

Apart from registration, stakeholders are seeking reforms in other  electoral issues  such as a  proposals from Malawi Congress Party(MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera’s  for a  legislation of 50-plus-one election victory for a President.

President Peter Mutharika amassed 39 per cent of the six million vote in the 2014 poll that put Chakwera on second position having missed Kamuzu Palace with just a 600000 plus vote to Mutharika.
