Kaliati threatens to close down disability unfriendly buildings in Malawi
Minister of Gender, Disability, the Elderly and Social Welfare, Patricia Kaliati has threatened to close any building with disability unfriendly structures.
Speaking in an interview with state controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) on Wednesday, Kaliati said her ministry is now impatient with the increasing number of buildings which are not friendly to people with disability.
”Actually, I will be consulting my director in the ministry to see what we can do but definitely I will be closing the buildings,” she said.
She said the government had given enough time to building owners to adjust their structures to be disability friendly.
“Those who are constructing their buildings now must know that there is a law that must be obeyed on disability,” said Kaliati.
She has not however said when she will close down the buildings.
Last year she warned she would close down some buildings in Mzuzu include the Reserve Bank building.

This woman thinks she is bigger than Africa. If she is to close those buildings she should start with all Government buildings and the rest should follow, leading by example.
She should close her house first.

Start with capital hill. Make capital hill disability friendly first before you go on your crusade. This confrontational and militant approach will not help anybody other than hurting the economy and Malawians . Phuma Mai awa kwambiri. This is a very very expensive policy as it requires substancial capital investment. Much as it may not cost much to make normal buildings disability friendly , it is totally a different thing when we talk about multi storey buildings as such structures may require lifts and lifts don’t cost chicken price. Procuring and installing lifts or escalators cost huge amounts on money… Read more »
Thank You madam!
How about CLOSING DOWN – not ‘threatening’ – ALL CORRUPTION-FRIENDLY ‘businesses’ and arranging to jail, bail and detain the operators and their associates?
That will have a TRUE EFFECT on ‘the builders’ of disability unfriendly ‘buildings’!
That’s commendable Honourable minister. Please start with all capital Hill buildings they are all disability unfriendly.
Muuuuuuuu paja aya safuna kudekha etiiiiiiiiii
You wish! Start with all the buildings at Capital Hill and lets see where that will take you. Whats wrong with the Mzuzu RBM building? Is not disability friendly?
